Canon EOS R1 Field Report from Antarctica: A Wildlife Photographer’s Perspective

While I accept his experience, this is 'review' feels rather biased for supposedly only being a "field report on my experiences". It doesn't read like a field report.

A lot of these quotes sound like they might as well be Canon marketing speak.
“And the reader, with his typing-finger as cold as snow,
stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? The praise came without influence. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags.
And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the reader thought of something he hadn't before. What if the reports, he thought, don’t come from Canon resorts. What if Canons R1´s performance, perhaps, is just a little bit more.”

Nowadays, it is kind of funny to read that every photographer who actually praises a camera is accused of company marketing talk. Seems like a report is only valid when one criticizes. But maybe, just maybe, some people have a hard time accepting that some statements are not just marketing talk but instead facts! I mean, we’re talking about a state of the art camera, of course, there will be some rightful claims about the camera being superior and more and more R1 users seem to prove it. But if the grinch can start believing in Christmas, maybe some critics can start believing in cameras that are actually up to the task and their claims.

I have never felt limited by 24MP. While I\'m (at best) an enthusiast-level photographer, I do enjoy sharing my images, including in print. I noticed years ago that the megapixels were just one factor, and not even a determining factor at that, once you got above a certain viewing distance. Even 3MP can look great in an 8x10 print if the rest of the image holds up.

"it has been my experience that if I need to crop that heavily, then it probably was not a very good photograph, to begin with, and I should probably move on to a different image."

LOL, tell that to the Leica Q3 owners :)
I'd say that a Q3 and an R1 will be used for a different type of photography. Even the regular M Leicas are rarely used for sports, and never for the usual wildlife motives. Also, the R1 may not be the ideal street photography camera...

I tried to find the "66º North touch liner gloves" so that I could buy a pair, but had no luck. I guess they're made in Iceland? If anyone knows where they may be found for purchase by someone in the US, then please let me know.
Easy to find with Google. 66 North is an Icelandic company selling mostly outdoor clothing.

I've just ordered mine... :)

What shall I say?
Fantastic pictures and video, great review by a highly talented user...
Just able to get back to this thread a bit more and I wanted to say I completely agree. Great to see images, video, and get firsthand experiences under extreme conditions. Thanks for putting in the time and effort to share with all of us.

I agree with you, mpmark, about the 24mp being a downside to the R1 (and possibly on the R6III). It's a nice topic to debate over nachos. But I don't understand the point of anything else you've written here. You say that "this photographer writes this article like paid promotional material," but with your choice of blustery words such as "claim," "idiot," "stretch," "boasts," and more, you write as if you have a large chip on your shoulder. After my years on this forum, and not always lovey-dovey, I see zero reason for your seething resentment.

Perhaps you also post about politics, and you think vitriol is necessary to make a point? Forgot to shift gears? Just speculating!

But happy holidays anyway!
OMG, are a YouTube influencer?
It was kind of crazy to see how well the R3 performed and my tests was pretty controlled imo. Even at 12,800 the R3 was a lot cleaner. I wanted every reason to sell the R3 and get the R1, but couldn’t justify it after seeing those results.

Only downfall of the R3 in the video mode is color profiles and codecs. Just give us a firmware update on the R3 that adds that and I’m happy. The rest is practically the same. AF is obviously different too, but the R3 isn’t bad by any means.
Well there's the mixed media cards, smaller EVF, slower AF, slower top speed, lack of pre-capture etc.
I sold 1x R3 to buy 1x R1 and it's a better camera than the R3.
Now how you judge "better" is entirely subjective, but I wouldn't trade the second R3.
I'd rather buy white glass like the Rf 100-300 F2.8 or RF 400 F2.8.
The R3 is still a great camera. One of Canon's best in recent memory.

firstly, this photographer writes this article like paid promotion material. You can claim you buy your own gear and anything you want but you don't have to be an idiot to see how its written.

Article quote "Many photographers never reach this point as they upgrade their cameras too often and never learn to master the tools they already own."

Bit of a stretch when he earlier boasts he "owned them all" 1DXiii, R5, R5ii, R3's, now two R1's. and you state others never master their tools? come on now.

Stating the camera handled the Antarctic (in the peak of the summer I might add) kinda is irrelevant, 99% of people wont have the ability to travel private charter to these locations anyway, so its kinda a mute point. Yes the R1 is most likely nicely weather sealed but so is the R5ii which I own, I've never had any problems with weather nor should I. I highly doubt he would've failed if he happened to have an R5ii with him on that same trip, so these points are a bit stretched to sell the camera.

I also love it when people's argument for 24mp is basically only used as a "Id rather have this "feature" and be stuck with 24mp". You're basically admitting you have no argument.

I guess you are YouTuber "influenced" into believing that the R1 is not the "flagship" because it is only 24MP?
OK, call your shiny R5 II the flagship.
Does it compete with the Sony A1 II and the Nikon Z9?
Great. Move along then. Nothing to say here.

It is also important to remember that the way we consume photographs is not at 100% magnification on a screen (that is how we pixel-peep them) but scaled to the resolution of the display device we are viewing them on.

I'm very curious about the average age of people who say stuff like this. It's almost like they don't actually interact with people who look at pictures on their phone / online. Pinch to zoom is very much a part of the game.
