Canon Camera and Lens Predictions for 2025

\"A new APS-C body without an EVF that will resemble the EOS M6 Mark II, but with some added size\"

Why would it be larger?
The MkII was already bigger than the MkI.
The physical lens mount of RF is 7mm wider and 2mm deeper than EF-M, so I can see them proportionally increasing the size of the camera or else the mount may interfere with the grip, etc...

here\'s to hoping for a sub-1500 gram RF 300mm f/2.8L! The RF 100-300 is too heavy and expensive, and unnecessary if you already have a 70-200. Super jealous of Sony\'s offering, 300mm is the perfect focal length for track-side motorsport photography!

Just get the EF 300 2.8 L II, it's quite lightweight for what it is and it's at least on par with Sony's new 300mm prime. It also works perfectly with the 1.4 and 2x converters, without sacrificing too much image quality. I got mine used in mint condition for around 3.500€ (retail price in Europe was 6.599€).
If Canon would release a RF version of this lens, it will for sure be minium 6000€ at least.
It's the sharpest lens I ever used and as a bonus, it comes with some decent "3D pop".

Back to topic: If Canon really releases a relatively inexpensive 500 f/5.6 DO, which also would be leightweight and compact it will be my "shut up and take my money" - moment. In the last couple of months, I've found myself more than often, looking jealously over to Nikon's wildlife lenses.

I mean the EF lens still weighs 60% more than the Sony without taking the adapter into account. I’m sure optically the canon is as good or better, but that weight difference is significant.

Yeah, you're kinda right. But somehow it still doesn't feel heavy, when walking around. I often carry it around for hours, when I'm out for roedeer or other animals. I don't feel like needing a tripot. Even though I got one of the Extenders attached most of the time. When I'm walking to location I even got my whole setup attached to my backpack via peak design clip to one side, and a thermal scope (~600g) to the other side. I don't feel like it's a big deal. But yeah, everyone feels different about weight.

Canon Cameras
  • A new APS-C body without an EVF that will resemble the EOS M6 Mark II, but with some added size.
  • A retro inspired EOS R camera near the end of 2025 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the AE-1 in 2026.
  • A G7X Mark IV or something similar.
These are the three I am really hoping for. As much as the R5II and R1 are made for people like me, I am very conscience of the fact that they are complete overkill for most photographers and people getting into photography. They are even overkill for my photography sometimes.

I very much enjoy my M6 II. While the AF is no longer current and can be improved, I love the form factor and the simplicity. The lens lineup is the primary weakness.

I think when people think "Retro" they think an overabundance of form and very little function. I hope by retro Canon puts out a classic camera with the simplicity of older cameras. A few bells & whistles, but have a slight retro look, maybe a rangefinder (my Dad's old Canonet comes to mind) and basic controls.

Owner of a G7X II here. Great camera. Still use it. Bit more focal length range. A slightly larger sensor, brighter aperture. I can see ways it can be upgraded.

I would be highly interested in any of the above.

OK, here is my prediction or better say wish:

RF 20mm f/2.8 pancake/muffin design

- nice, compact, affordable and can be very useful on both FF and APS-C bodies
- priced around 300 USD (such as 28mm f/2.8)

alternatively, I am almost positive Cannon will release something only for the crop sensor camera:

RF-S prime compact lens in the focal range of 20 to 24mm and aperture range of f/2 to f/2.8

- my bet is they are going to redo EF-S 24mm f/2.8 for the RF mount which would be very disappointing
- unfortunately, I don't think they are going to release 22mm f/2 and 32mm f/1.4 for the RF mount

Since we already have the 17-55mm for EF, I'd love to see an actual upgrade with a little more zoom range.
Sigma had a very versatile 17-70mm Contemporary 2.8-4 back in the EF days, I would love if Canon could come up with a similar design, maybe a 15-65mm 2.8-4.

My other wish would be finally getting the 22mm f/2 pancake for RF-S. Perfect 35mm equivalent and ultra small. But I still have the theory that Canon ditched that lens because it was too good and too cheap.

I think a G7X Mark IV is a safe bet. Canon would be really stupid to ignore the latest trend that lets the old G7X Mark II fly off the shelves. In Germany it even beats the Fujifilm X100VI sales right now. Generation Tiktok is going crazy for these premium compacts.
