In this patent application (2024-172507), Canon is showing off some prime designs for both full-frame sensors and some other embodiments for super-35.
I’m not sure about the usefulness of the super-35 designs, but curiously, Canon is still creating embodiments for the format. All these lenses also have image stabilization, but they look rather simplistic, so I assume they are meant as non-L-grade consumer lenses.
I’m unsure about the usefulness of a 65mm lens on a full-frame camera, but the 50 and 85mm designs would be useful.
Canon RF 65mm F2.0 IS
This is a pretty small 65mm prime for full-frame RF mount cameras. The L2 group is for image stabilization.
Focal Length | 63.70 |
F-number | 2.00 |
Half Angle of view | 18.76 |
Image Height | 21.64 |
Total Lens Length | 75.00 |
Back Focus Distance | 12.56 |
Canon RF 50mm F2.0 IS Cinema
An image height of 15mm is larger than required for APS-C (13.66mm); this usually indicates a super-25 or cinema lens. This is a 50mm F2.0 for the RF mount, with stabilization and good for a camera such as the C70 with a Super-35 sensor. With crop factor, this is equivalent to around 75mm.
Focal Length | 48.50 |
F-number | 2.00 |
Half Angle of view | 17.19 |
Image Height | 15.00 |
Total Lens Length | 70.00 |
Back Focus Distance | 14.20 |
Canon RF 85mm F2.0 IS Cinema
As with the others, this embodiment has an image height of 15mm, which is larger than required for APS-C (13.66mm); this usually indicates a super-25 or cinema lens. This is a compact 85mm lens around 80mm in total length. With crop factor, this is equivalent to around 130mm.
Focal Length | 85.00 |
F-number | 2.00 |
Half Angle of view | 10.01 |
Image Height | 15.00 |
Total Lens Length | 100.00 |
Back Focus Distance | 20.00 |
Canon RF 65mm F2.0 IS Cinema
As with the others, this embodiment has an image height of 15mm, which is larger than required for APS-C (13.66mm); this usually indicates a super-25 or cinema lens. This is a compact 65mm F2.0 lens of only around 64mm in total length. With crop factor, this has the equivalent of around 100mm.
Focal Length | 63.70 |
F-number | 2.00 |
Half Angle of view | 13.25 |
Image Height | 15.00 |
Total Lens Length | 75.00 |
Back Focus Distance | 11.00 |
As with all patent applications, this is a look into Canon’s ongoing research and may not ultimately be a product.
