Canon EOS R5 Mark II firmware v1.0.1 released

You are giving incorrect information...
The battery (LP-E6N/H) in the R can be charged directly via the USB-C PD charger without any problems. No battery grip is required.
Oh, that is interesting! Mine has never charged LP-E6N when I plugged the cable into that port. (And ruined a friend's event when he borrowed my R for a trip and tried to charge that way overnight.) I always have the battery grip attached though - I wonder if that's what makes the difference?

Doesn't have to be a Canon PD-E1/2 charger, works with any PD charger.

Probably you're aware, but the camera power switch must be set to off for the battery to be charged via USB.
Yep. It would be nice to not have to use the DR-E6 when USB PD can supply more than enough power. Thanks for the sanity check though!

I didn't see it mentioned, but for all the other cameras that got an update, I assume this firmware update adds support for the DR-E6P adapter, in addition to the batteries?

I've tried the PD-E1, and about half a dozen PD 3.0 chargers. The port functions for data just fine, so I don't think it's broken. Ultimately, it's never been a big deal since the grip has a working port, and moving into the future, I'll mostly be carrying around LP-E6P which won't charge in the R anyway.

But thanks for the info!

Just to add this, so I won't talk about this topic anymore...
See that you didn't use a USB-A to USB-C connection in the failed attempt to directly charge the R - there should be a USB-C to USB-C connection between the PD charger and the camera.

Just for any googler that comes across this thread in the future: It's not just the connector, the cable itself has to be PD compliant. There's 2 or 4 wire C-to-C cables out there without the CC pin that won't work for PD, and even beyond that, max amps and volts will depend on what the chip in the cable says it supports for more advanced cables.

Am I the only one annoyed by the daily repeated message 'MODE Movie <--> still switching'? After every start, after every standby, this message appears over the first photo. Extremely annoying. There must be a way to turn this off in the menu. Unfortunately, even with firmware 1.0.1, the message still appears and cannot be deactivated in the menu.

Kudos for fixing these rare bugs, but it would also be great if Canon homogenized features and user experience.
Like why does a lower end camera like the R50 and R8 have lens breathing compensation and the R5, R6, R7 and R10 do not?
Why do the R5 and R6 have older autofocus systems and never got updated - take notes from Fuji.
Why can the R8 shoot with 1/16000 electronic shutter, and the R5 and R6 cannot although they all run on a Digic X?

I believe that the R50 and R8 have a newer version of the Digic X then the others you mentioned, that could be the reason why the R50 and R8 got lens breathing compensation.

Digic X is a processor family, not an single particular chip.
Also when it comes to electronic shutter, the actual Sensordesign has a lot to do with the maximum shutter speed.
It's never just about one piece of hardware in a camera.
You cannot Firmware-Update a faster sensor. And even if the processors were the same, the digic X wouldn't be able to be fully utilised, when the data from the sensor doesn't come in fast enough.
See the electronic shutter performance of the R7 for example.
