Canon Patent Application: Active Cooling Grip Revisited

Yes, (y)
That's the reason people buy the R5C camera. If I can phrase it correctly: 'These are the photographers looking for something much more extra on the VIDEO END without compromising on the PHOTO END. They want all the Photo features the R5 can deliver + cinema-level Video features, & that's why they are willing to pay extra for such a system.'

Basically, what they want is an R5 with roughly the same form factor, but on steroids.

If Canon offered a white version of the R5 II then I'd probably choose it. It'd look nice with the white RF 100-500L and definetly make a *cool* package!

there's really alot to be said about this. or at least an option for a more heat reflective covering to the cameras.

black was okay for film (mostly) but is certainly bad for digital.

If a future R5c II was identical to the R5 II but with the fan included and slightly thicker, then I'd prefer to get that R5c II instead. But if I have to give up "stills" features in order to get more "video" features in it then I'd pass (again) on the "c" version.

I'm not a video person, but I'd be interested in a cheap astro-setup if the cooling grip is shown to help enough. It won't be anywhere close to a dedicated sensor with active (peltier etc) cooling, but that's OK with me.

that would be a cool (literally) use case for it - but your mount has to be able to handle the additional weight - if you are doing deepsky.

if you are doing astro landscapes, the cooling grip will certainly and absolutely help with noise - especially over long sessions. internal heat is cumulative, so the longer you are using your camera for shooting even astro landscapes, the more noise will creep into the images.

And have a way to direct the waste heat from the grip to lens so you can leave the dew heater at home :)

I like the idea, but blowing hot air around the lens will probably result in heat distortion in the images. For the same reason it is a good idea to switch of the car heating / ventilation when photographing birds from the car on a cold day.

The vent holes are two small ones on the side and a larger one on the bottom where the grip attaches.

it would be difficult for it to collect a significant amount of stuff.

laptops, for instance, have venting underside and at the back or sides, so very similar designs. Panny has a camera with the similar sort of arrangement. Tons of electronics have passive venting - with far less sealing.
The pessimists are out in force. Cameras venting steam. O M G.

I will be heard the bad guy now but what is the point to make a cooling grip when the competition doesn\'t need one and the recording times are huge without overheating... is it so hard for Canon to do something similiar? One week ago my R6 (C cam) stopped recording due to overheating at 1080p 50p while I was shooting an event at 37C under the sun. My old C100 Mark II never overheated, my C70 never does and also my bm 6k pro the same. Even the Canon EOS R didn\'t overheat or my old 5D4. I understand that some have internal fans and some were recording at 8-bit 420 (except my beloved c70 and also BM) but if competition can make it work with their MILC bodies then Canon should be able to follow! We use mics, cages, on camera LED lights and so much more and now we neew to add a heavy grip also, to be able to cool the camera! This is unacceptable IMO.
I'm hyperventilating after reading that.
