Canon Patent Applicaton: DO Supertelephoto with Built-In Extender

Regarding the comment on the DO/PF fresnel tech... The 600mm and 800mm consumer lenses that Canon came out with just a couple years ago were pretty wild, and I don't think this community has quite yet digested how cool they are. Yes, they're very wonky with their trombone mechanism, but holy smokes, they're sharp. And cheap. Couldn't be a better proof-of-concept that you can get high image quality with DO, and that it can be cheap.

Someone pointed out that maybe there's a big decline in yield when you get larger elements. This could be true. The recent consumer supertelephoto lenses are so small in aperture that the elements aren't large. But, still, the lack of more and wider-aperture offerings does make me think that Canon isn't prioritizing, say, a DO 600 f/5.6, probably more for protecting their expensive lens lines than lack of capability.

This plays into the built-in TC issue in a fashion. If there is pressure to keep a DO element small, you're probably making a thinner-aperture lens. The TC will lose another stop of light. A product manager may want to choose one or the other when finding the right balance. I used to think that this would encourage built-in TCs, but now that you can buy a 600mm f/11 lens used on eBay in the 400s, I'm thinking the fresnel lens elements are probably the cheaper way to go for efficient oomph for focal length versus size/cost.
My RF 800mm f/11 is just as sharp as my last EF 400mm DO ii with the EF 2xTC at f/8 as is the RF 200-800mm at 800mm f/9.

My 400 DO II is perhaps my favorite lens and I’d be very tempted to move up to this. Curious whether the pricing would be inline with Nikon’s PF lenses or if it’ll be in the 5 figure range

Whatever you guys want to call her, married or not she says I need to sell some gear before I can buy more.
Maybe I am lucky... I don't have big whites but my underwater gear adds up and I need a hobby! My other hobbies cost me nothing.
My global insurance premium is itemised and sitting at 2.7% of replacement value. Not a lot of GAS for some time now except for maybe a fast/wide prime if/when it ever shows up.

Handbags are also expensive!! :)

There is no question if one was to trade in (or even better, sell) their EF 400 DOII and buy this RF 400DO/TC lens that they would be putting out a lot of extra cash.
You bring up the three potential benefits that could materialize:
1) Convenience and flexibility of a built-in TC
2) Sharper/better optics than a lens from 2014
3) Lighter weight than a lens from 2014

If those are important enough then it could be worth it. I'd seriously consider one if I was shooting Canon. The EF 400DOII was probably my all time favourite Canon lens and the last one I sold after I was adapting it to my Sony gear for awhile.
I'd also bet on a considerable IS improvement.

Another one who is behind the times: we have same-sex marriages here in which, good for them, they describe themselves as husband and wife.
In this day and age, you need to say "spouse", not "wife"..... It should be obvious, why.....

why the need to be married?? "partner", "significant other", dependent"....

He’s also out of touch. Husband and wife have come back into fashion again.

Just corrected that for you.... :)

And there's me thinking this was a thread about the EF 400mm DO IS mk II's replacement....and suddenly it's all about gender politics and pro-nouns.

Here's hoping!
However, in reply to your three points:
1) yes I agree, although just as inconvienient if you want to use a 2x TC.
2) The EF lens from 2014 is equally as sharp as the latest / current RF 400mm f2.8 LIS. Revision is no guarentee of "more sharpness".
3) We will wait for that assumption to be seen. Adding a chunck of 1.4x tc flippable optics and supporting material isn't going to be light and could easily make this new RF lens as heavy as the old EF lens. I'd hope for it to be smaller and lighter....but you know...it's a Canon RF super white tele. Canon have been under-investing in these for quite a few years now.

Wasn't aware of that lens. It came out 5 years after Canon's,
Nikon has had 200-400 f/4 lenses for a long time before Canon (the latest one is the 3rd version), but Canon was the first to add an integrated TC.
so does that mean we can expect Canon's integrated TC primes in 2027?
Only Canon knows :ROFLMAO:

You got it going!

Maybe with your scruples. This is a public forum...he can call his significant other anything that he wants.
Maybe keep your nod to gender politics between you and your own significant other?

Yes they were cheaper - doesn't make my post wrong....
However, I think Nikon were the first to make a 200-400mm f4 lens and Canon took forever to get their's to market. When they did...it has the 1.4 TC flipper, whihc was a bit of a revolution at the time. canon's version wasn't as popular as Nikons partly due to pricing. Then nikon did the same with their, put a 1.4x flipper in it and charged a pile of cash more. It's a classic case of each brand inspiring and leap frogging each other. We as customers sometimes sit back and munch the pop corn and say...wow...look at that!
I think it's ironic that Canon were the first to put image stabilisers in their super whites. the first to paint them white too. The first to do the flippy 1.4x TC, the first to use diffractive optics, the first on so many fronts. I think they invented the 400mm f2.8, 500mm f4 and 600mm f4 too. But these days, they seem a little complacent and Nikon have a lot more 400/500/600mm offering. Some with flippy TC's and others with DO elements.
