My 600EX flashes work fine on the new shoe, as on-camera or a master. The ST-E3-RT did, too, before I swapped it for the ST-E10.That's good to hear. But I'm confused based on what I saw in the manual:

This is good to hear. I'm confused now why the manual would make it sound like it simply wouldn't work on the new R52.My 600EX flashes work fine on the new shoe, as on-camera or a master. The ST-E3-RT did, too, before I swapped it for the ST-E10.
Took me a bit to do because I never use these functions myself! All these scenarios seem to be working totally as expected. Managed to run them in separate groups and have one ettl, one manual. 2nd curtain worked with this as well. Tried everything with mechanical and ES. All worked as expected. One thing I did notice that doesn't work is that you can't change the settings and custom functions of the flash from the camera, like you can on the R5 MkI. So that might be an issue for some people?Does second curtain work with on-camera in ETTL? And with the electronic shutter?
Does the Group function work? For example, with ETTL on the on-camera flash and manual on a slave? With wireless 2nd curtain?
The R3 manual says the same thing. It's wrong. All the normal flash functionality is there. Just look at the hotshoe on the R5II, it has the same pin connection points as the pins on your EL-1. The new flashes have a flat plate there, the communication is all via the row of gold contacts that looks like a big Apple Lightening connector. This is good to hear. The exception is the R50, which has only the new contacts and not the ones for old flashes. For that one camera, the AD-E1 adapter is needed to use old-style flashes. There is also a Canon UK trade show interview on youtube back when they announced the new hot shoe and there they said also you need the adapter, but yes as pointed out by a few here the digital hot shoe supports all the same flashes you used before.

Indeed, the EL-1 is a great flash, a real workhorse for a pro. I also own an EL-5. Why stop?? So, a Mark2 or not? A great benefit not relying on AAs or external battery packs.I own a EL-1 and think it is a great flash.
I assumed they would introduce a Mark2 with digital hotshoe mount.
I would be sad if thats not the case.
I do as well and also think it is a great flash. I have read that many people have issues with it but have never experienced them myself, though I do not use it very often.I own a EL-1 and think it is a great flash.

I wonder how many people actually use Canon flashes. Lately I haven't been seeing any at all. I know one guy that got an EL 1 years ago and he complained about it. Most people I know or seen today use Godox and a few use Profoto. So we’re down to the EL-5 (600-series replacement) and EL-10 (430-series replacement). Presumably new flashes are on the way, though Canon does not seem to be giving much love to the flash market these days.
The R50 needs an adapter just to use it but it is the only camera as of now.I have two R5 MkII's and two EL-1's. They actually work fine without the adapter. My understanding is the only reason you need the adapter is if you need it to be weather sealed.
It still works fine with the R5 Mk II and the EL-1. So far I haven't found any reason for the adapter beyond using the camera in the rain.EL-1 + $1,099.00 = GODOX x 4
Canon, when you bring back the EL-1 w/ the new shoe, how about dialing down the arrogant pricing a TAD.
Move over to what? Doing crossword puzzles instead of photography? Perhaps take up baking bread? Don't leave us hanging! It looks like Canon is in a big mess now. I'm thinking to get rid of my gear to move over
