Canon Announces First Lens in Series of Fixed Focal Length RF Hybrid Lenses – RF35mm F1.4L VCM

I don't like what I saw in that video. The ghosting, distortion, dark corners, etc. are concerning to me. I'd like to see other reviews by people I trust. Maybe he had a bad copy or didn't test correctly, idk. I'm not a pro, just an amateur who's trying to get better.

I pre-ordered the lens because I had high hopes it would be great like the other RF L lenses. Don't most people use reviews before they purchase new high $ gear? Please let me know if I'm wrong.
I watch all the reviews before buying :) But sending something back or not depends on how it performs for me. If I had depended on early reviews, I would have not bought the 100-500L (f/7.1 is unusable!!!), the RF16 (software corrections!!!) or RF28(it’s not glass!!!) and I absolutely love using those.

I’m not fond of 35mm, so I never considered buying this lens, no matter how glowing the reviews are :)

Yeah you make a really good point. I'm going to take it out this weekend.

I’ve now watched four in depth reviews of the Canon RF 35mm f1.4L VSM. All the reviewers from four different countries are highly critical of the lens saying the distortion correct is severe and introduces noise in the corners in low light shots. That it has bad flaring with front lighting, the lens group rattles badly when the power is turned off, it has poor cromatic aberrations are not well controlled a as a result the lens is expensive and not worth the money (which is more expensive than comparable lenses from Sony & Nikon.
This greatly disappoints me after such a long time of waiting and Canon original promise of improved optics.
Maybe there will be a RF 35mm f1.2L lens after all with superior optics.

I strongly suspect that every future wide angle RF lens from Canon will rely on distortion correction, even a 35mm f/1.2L.

As I said earlier in this thread, try it yourself, or download CR3s from review sites to have first hand experience with the results. The RF16 and RF28 pleasantly surprised me, so I don't hate corrections a priori anymore :)

If they are saying that, they are clueless about optics. I personally do not trust a review by anyone who does not have at least a basic understanding of optical aberrations and the implications of correcting them.

Neither distortion nor its correction introduce noise. Vignetting correction introduces noise.

Edit: saw in another thread that one YouTube reviewer who complained about flare was questioned in the comments about not using a hood and replied that he didn’t because he’s, “…not an idiot.” I disagree.

You can feel free to trust such reviews. As Ben K. asked, "Who is more foolish? The fool or the fool who follows him?"

All wide-angle lenses rely on distortion correction.
Most do it optically.
The RF 10-24 f/4 L and RF 35 f/1.4 L rely heavily on digital correction.
Most of the things people are complaining about like dark corners also happen with Canon's optically corrected RF L lenses.
