R1. I got one!

I wonder if this will determine auto ISO more accurately

EDIT: I'm wondering about this because I often use auto ISO. I've noticed that photos I've taken with a DSLR have lower ISO values than photos taken with a mirrorless camera. The photos were taken at the same locations and under the same conditions. The difference is, for example, 1600 and 4000 ISO. Of course you can correct the noise with software, but I prefer lower ISO values. On the other hand the DSLR's were using the same 384 zone metering system.
I believe so. With my R5 and shooting auto-ISO, it was very common for me to be adjusting +/- (usually plus) 0.3-0.5 stops in post processing. Occasionally higher. Withe the R1 and auto-ISO, I am +/- 0.1 stops typically. Occasionally, I am up to 0.3-0.5. But, it is nailing exposure much better to how I like to expose. I have attributed that to enabled "Detect Priority AE" (bottom red/shooting tab 2).

Oh it's nice down there.

The deal is kind of already on their website, well it was when I ordered it at least. There was possibly a sale of sorts on, it was on Black Friday - dunno if that mattered. I just selected my basket and then emailed to ask if I could have any reductions. Support is amazing, replies almost straight away, and that's how I got the price down further.
Well some one has to live here, I am between the Camargue and the mountains.
Nimes pro shop doing a promotion in the Camargue in January, so I should get to play with some new toys.
Can you give me website for your shop ?

I'd rather an actual copy in the box rather than QI code to an online manual.
Fair enough. I generally chuck manuals directly back into the box and struggle for ever more.

Just pointing out that it’s not inexplicable that’s all. Perfectly reasonable explanation.

What bothers me more isn’t that they didn’t include a manual, rather they included a manual sized book whose only real purpose is to direct you to a manual. Could have made do with a single piece of paper with a QI code, which everyone understands what one does with, which links to a language selection page, which links to the manual etc.

I’m really interested in what other R1 (actually any modern mirrorless camera) owners do to set theirs up, how they shoot etc. As I mentioned - it’s overwhelming me slightly, the hyper modern difference between this and my comfort zone. I’m going to be fine, but the info would be interesting.

I found it via advice from this site. It’s really rather cheap. But on the contrary to other similar sites, it’s excellent for customer service. So far anyway.

I have also used e-infinity.com (typing that from memory I don’t know if that’s the correct address). Good also.

Were you able to register the camera at Canon CPS? (since it is grey-market)

I go through Bryan's TDP set up guide. It is absolutely a lot to set up. The R1 has even more than the R5 did. While it took time, I do appreciate Ron/Whistling Wings taking the 95 minutes and talking about each adjustment he thought was important. But, I would start with Bryan's.

As for me, before those two guides were out, I started with the basics.
  1. Red/Shoot Tab 1: I shoot RAW both card slots. I believe I had to go to Yellow Tab 1/Rec Options - Rec separately, then back to Red Tab 1 and set both cards to RAW.
  2. Then I started setting up a few buttons, first, back button AF. Green tab (circle with a box coming out of it) Tab 1: "Customize buttons for shooting". You can scroll through each button that is customizable. AF-On button is 8th down. I set mine to case 3 with Fully pressed down "Switch continuous shooting modes". So half press down, and I am in the regular shooting mode, full press down I go to a faster fps.
  3. Next button, I change the * button (10th down) to "Metering AF Start" but have this set to be spot focus only. No subject tracking.
  4. I've tweaked a couple of other buttons, but honestly, I am still adjusting. Eventually I will convert the MFn button to toggle between custom modes. I move the MFn "Dial func" to MFn 2.
  5. I've adjusted the Quick Control screen to my liking, this is Red/Shoot Tab7.
  6. AF/Purple tab 1 I am set to SERVO, AF area spot, Whole Area tracking off (currently, but I toggle this with a button).
  7. AF Tab 2: Animal detection (birds), Eye detection on,
  8. AF Tab 3: I have gone to manual, -2 Tracking sensitivity and +2 Accel/decel (Ron's settings, I am getting used to it, but so far so good)
  9. I've adjusted my FPS in Orange (camera with dots beneath it) Custom tab 4, "Continues shooting speed" to 7.5 fps, 15 fps, and 30 fps. But, I am still tinkering with this.
  10. Right now, I am set up with spot AF, subject detect as my regular AF mode at 7.5 fps. I get that by half press AF-on. Full press AF on it goes to 15 fps. Then I got to * and I get 7.5 fps with spot AF only (no subject tracking).

Good luck. I would set aside some time, pour yourself a nice Latte....and go through Bryan's guide...then watch Ron's video. Happy to help with questions, but there is a lot to potentially cover.

Thanks for your little guide, I appreciate it. Always very interested in other people’s set ups.
I went through that guys guide when I first got the camera, and copied/adjusted various of his settings.
I haven’t looked at the video yet but I’ll get chance today.

Most videos and advice from people around here are centered on bird photography, which I don’t do. But there are a lot of similarities between that and the type of shooting situations I’m in, although with people being the subject I have a lot more say on what they do!
Same with sports, it’s not what I do (generally, I do do a bit), but the advice is directly transferable to the situations I sometimes find myself in.

Ideally I would like to see some type of portrait/wedding/reportage type guide, but I’ll need to wait for those sorts of things I think. I discovered a lot by watching R3 based videos, to the point where I nearly got an R3 instead!

Fair enough. I am not a wedding photographer...so take this for whatever it is worth, if I were, I would be playing with:
  • Eye control AF: Custom/Green Tab 5. I wear progressive lenses. This worked ok. Not amazing, but I could see how it could work for people.
  • In terms of quickly turning this on or off, I believe the R1 is default with the set button for this feature. But, Custom/Green Tab 1.
  • AF/Purple 2: Register people. That seems like a custom made feature for Wedding Photography.
Good luck and enjoy. If I see a portrait/wedding/reportage set up, I will let you know.

I can’t get the eye thing to work. Contacts here too. And right, the people priority thing will be great, I have the set button to turn that on and off since I tried it and found it flawless.

I have been playing though, after a few tips from that long wildlife video that you posted.

I have set up the multi controller similar to how he recommended, half press turns on focussing, customised to spot and servo start. Full press adds eye detection focus, people detection and a larger expanded focus area.
I turned off full area focus in settings, and have that on a front button instead, in the form of tracking.
On the asterisk button I have normal af start, and on the af area button I have a selection of flexible af zones.

This way I can have several methods of focusing suited to 1 person (main af), groups of people(*af), or randomly moving people (front button af).

I think this is going to help me in the three main situations I come across. Portraits, group shots, and random occurrences happening.
