Upcoming 2024 Canon RF lens recap

So…lots of wide angle lenses in an Olympics year? This is the sports year. The year of the R5ii and R1–the speed flagships. And we’ve all been waiting patiently for them to put out dedicated supertele primes, or perhaps even some mid tier PF options. No long glass this year?
The 200-500/4 has been rumored for some time, and seems ideally suited to the Olympics. Canon indicated they’d be keeping to their past pace of 7-8 RF lenses per year, and since we’re at zero so far it seems at least probable we’ll see the 200-500/4 announced soon and mounted on R1’s in use at the Olympics (even if neither are yet in the hands of the general public).

Your comment about mid-tier PF lenses reminds me of your earlier statement about a ‘lack of viable long Canon lenses for dawn/dusk shooting’. I suppose to you ‘viable’ means cheaper than lenses like the 600/4 and 800/5.6…and a stop or more slower than those, but less than a stop faster than the 100-500L. If threading that needle is important to you, just buy one of the Nikon lenses and a Z8 to go with it.

Many months ago there were rumors that Canon was working on a RF mount 400 mm or 500 mm DO lens, but I have not heard anything recently with regards to DO lenses from Canon. For me personally, a 400 mm DO would be a bit short, but a 500 mm DO lens with reasonable aperture (f4-f5.6) would be a desirable lens.
There was also the EF mount 600/4 DO that was not just a rumor but was shown off by Canon as a prototype. Of course, that was 9 years ago…
