Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM II mentioned [CR2]

Has anyone heard anything new about the Mk II?

I'm itching to get a 28-70 f2 soon-ish, and from experience there will be at least 2 or more sales / promos / cashbacks before the end of the year. Canon Europe often does Black Friday and New Years I think.

I would hate to skip all those and then still no Mk II materializes.

The rumor dates back to Feb. 2024
Is it possible that ultimately it was the 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM that was recently released? And therefore no MK II

This original version is quite good, but not quite as sharp into the sides and corners as the best L primes. If you don't plant to crop heavily or pixel peep, and of course accept the size and weight, I think you should go ahead and take advantage of the end of year savings. As another said, it's possible the 28-70mm f/2.8 was what the rumor was based on.

I'm quite sure there will be a Mk. II 28-70 f/2 some day.
The weight of the current one is for many an obstacle, the size as well.
The question is rather, will the hypothetical Mk. II rely heavily on software correction, or can the goal be achieved with different design and/or glass. I too I'm hoping for better corners, as EricN just wrote, primes are still visibly better.

I’m not so sure. It would not surprise me if the next iteration of an f/2 standard zoom from Canon starts at 24mm.

24 is such a big design challenge. We'd be looking at the software correction stuff to keep size, weight and cost down.

I have no opinion on software correction at this point in time.

I'm sure it would require correction. But so do the RF 14-35/4L, RF 10-20/4L and even the RF 24-105/2.8L. Personally, I'm fine with it. Like @Del Paso, a 24-70/2 would be an instant pre-order for me.

They gotta offer something new besides size and weight.

I guess it's only a $3000 lens, not a $10000 lens.
But I somehow think that a "statement lens" should be current for more than 6 years.
Unreasonable, I know.

BTW, the current one is now on sale -- $2800 down from $3100.

It is current. It’s not like this lens suddenly became outdated just because a different brand released an equivalent offering.
I mean it is a better offering IMO unless the full testing reveals Sony’s is optically subpar. It’s the same range and aperture while weighing 40% less.

I’m sure canon will respond. What that looks like I don’t know

It has become outdated because I :p want an RF 24-70 f/2.
A valid reason, isn't it?
In a way I'm hoping for a future with more 28-xx lenses. I love 28mm, I don't like 24mm and, as a consequence, it's been great having the 28mm focal length at the beginning of the zoom ring, as it's safe for me now to turn it all the way, knowing I'll be able to shoot with less distortions. That's one of the things I've been enjoying the most after replacing my EF 24-70mm f/2.8 II with the 28-70mm f/2.

A 24-70mm f/2 would probably use at least a 95mm filter thread as well, unless they go the software correction path.

These lenses definitely have a learning curve, though. It is one thing to shoot at 28mm f/2, but turning the zoom ring to 70mm while staying at f/2 produces an extremely different result. It's very easy to make the mistake of setting the lens to f/2 on the wide end, for lower ISO, then zoom in and "damn, I'm at f/2! Not enough DoF!". I find myself setting the lens to f/2.8, at the beginning of a job.

I mean it is a better offering
As it should, considering its release comes six years later :)

I too like 28mm focal length.
Yet, my experience clearly showed that 28mm can often be a bit "long" in the mountains. That's why I'd prefer the zoom to start at 24mm.
Nevertheless, my most often WA is neither a 24mm nor a 28mm, but a 35mm. But when I need wider, 28mm are just too close in this specific environment.
I don't even need f/2 or f/2,8, but experience has often shown that the much more expensive brighter lenses are usually better than their f/4 counterparts.
Landscapes are rarely shot wide open. :) But they need sharp corners!
