Thoughts from members that own the R3 but bought the R5 MkII

I can’t decide if I want to downgrade the resolution and carry the weight of a larger body again. And I’m not even sure the rest of the R3 is that much of an upgrade either if so many people had such issues with the eye control that was one of the bigger selling points. Is the AF that much better on an R3 than the R5? Really tough choice, especially since the R3 is significantly cheaper…
Wait for a few months and Panamoz will be selling the R5ii 20-30% cheaper. For me, the choice is absolutely clear - I want the resolution of the R5, I do not want a larger, heavier body, and the 5 series are tailor-made for the size of my hands.

Size and resolution is definitely important to me as well. Reason I sold my 1dx2 and bought an R was mostly size and weight, and getting into mirrorless. I think it will be the R5 II for me, if I will ever get a hold of one that is…

The killer feature for me, against the R3 (aside the potential autofocus ‘stickiness’ I have been hearing about - in the case of the r5ii and the R1), is precapture.

Technically r6ii has pre capture too. Though I think it’s better implemented on the new cameras (separate files instead of a container, and E shutter is generally more useful with the stacked sensors). Surprised the R3 never got it

Tough choice this, and one I didn’t expect to make.. the difference between a slightly used R3 and a new R5 II is quite significant. And while people have always claimed AF system in the 5d3 and 5d4 was basically the same as the 1dx and 1dx2/3 it really wasn’t. The 1-series is something else, but that is a bit different between the R5 II and R3.
The 1Dx was a huge step up from the 5D3 in AF performance.
My keeper rate for motorcycle racing instantly doubled when I bought a used 1Dx. I picked it up while on the road to Assen and after using it for 30 minutes, I packed away the 5D3 for the weekend. I have rarely used it since then and it's on permanent loan to my step-mom as backup for her own 5D3.

Going from 1Dx to the R3 was also a big step up in terms of AF performance.
Only time where the R3 failed big time was when trying to focus on a helicopter deploying flares. R3 images was a complete blurr, but the 1Dx could focus.
Not sure where you are located Viggo
Viggo is in Norway.

This is what I'm waiting for.
Last time I looked, their price in euros was approximately 10% lower than elsewhere.
Body number 2 will be from Panamoz, if minus 20-30% becomes reality.
Yes, my wonderful 5 D IV will be replaced... but not sold!

E-Infin is often even cheaper! R3 is currently 3980€ v 4177€ for example.

Are they as reliable as Panamoz?
And: Their warranty is 12 months, Panamoz' warranty is 3 years...
Dont know - bought several lenses and 2x 5div from them and never had any trouble. Probably spent 25k in total over a few years. Not that bothered by warranty - I'm insured to the hilt and my stuff is used and abused in a professional situation daily. A year for faulty equipment is all I have ever really made use of.

If you're insured, ok.
But in France, cost of insurance is about 10% of the equipment's value per year.
Therefore, I prefer 3 warranty years over saving 200 euros on a 4000 euro camera. Repairs out of warranty could cost lots more...

I'm in France too. I pay insurance because I need to always have working equipment. The cost comes out of my business. I send it to Canon to fix, with CPS, and thats the end of it.

Never used a warranty other than if there is a manufacturing defect.

Saving money on purchases is not important, particularly, but I do it when I can because I'm thrifty like that.
