The next 2 VCM L prime lenses are scheduled for September

The EF 85 f/1.4 IS is legendary.
I hope they keep the IS instead of making it tiny.
It can still be a lot smaller than the f/1.2 versions.
Maybe they should also make an RF 85 f/1.8 VCM that is small, light, and gimbal friendly.
It would indeed be a sin to cripple this excellent lens. A bit smaller and lighter, why not, provided the IQ, the mechanical quality and IS remain untouched!

Canon - PLEASE release some nightscape lenses for RF. Something to compete with the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG DN or the 14mm f/1.4 DG DN with those type of features and pricing. Or failing that, just release Sigma to produce those excellent lenses for the RF mount. How can it be that the company that released multiple astro optimized camera bodies in the past has now totally abandoned this market segment?

Agree! I'd like to have that Sigma 20mm, or an equivalent from Canon.

My guess the 24mm 1.4L VCM will likely use the same formula again:
sharper than even the 24mm 1.8 - similar design with small front opening and huge rear element (like the EF-M 22mm 2.0, RF 35 1.8, RF 24 1.8 etc. and the RF 35 1.4L)
otherwise optically compromised (awkward bokeh likely with onion rings, LoCA, strong vignetting), but parfocal and small&light.

I\'m just about okay with the 35mm 1.4L - although the green fringing drives me nuts in some images - and it cannot be fixed in post.
The 24 1.8 is a non-starter for me as its bokeh is busy and for astro the strong vignetting is also bad.
... doesn\'t bode well for the 24 1.4.
I picked up the 24 f/1.8 STM and for its size and price it's a solid performer. The bokeh isn't perfect but it still produces beautiful shots as you can see in my photo from my office in the sky. I don't travel with my Sigma 24 f/1.4 anymore due to its weight and need for the adapter. That being said I'm hoping this RF 24 f/1.4 can replace both of my lenses.

The 35/1.4L is the first RF lens announced this year. If they announce four more this year, that puts them at 5 lenses for 2024 – significantly less than their previously-promised 7-8 lenses per year. The article suggests they will ship the two VCM lenses but might not actually ship the other two new lenses until 2025, and since Canon 'counts' lenses when they start shipping that would mean only three lenses this year.

I'd call that very disappointing.
Is the 7-8 lenses just RF or RF/RF-S? They did announce the two RF-S VR lenses, so that bumps it to 7 lenses announced if this rumor is true.

Forgot about those. Yes, Canon counts RF-S lenses so assuming that the 7.8mm one actually launches on time (it was a development announcement, but said fall availability), that could be 7 lenses. For Canon's lens counts, announcement date doesn't matter, they notch a lens when it starts shipping. The rumor indicated the two VCM lenses would ship this year and the other two would not, so that would be 5 lenses this year.

Less disappointing, but still disappointing to me.

But a sharp one, this time, unlike the EF 20mmf/2,8. :p
That 20/2.8 is replaced by 16/2.8.

If Canon does the same as Sony Nikon, which is f1.8, then I don't see why not let Sigma to do the f1.4.

Or Canon could decide not to make a 20mm prime, Sigma do it with 50USD Canon tax.

The 50mm interests me, I’d like something better than my 50STM, but the 50 f/1.2L is a bit too large for my liking.
Same here! But I'm not sure that I can justify the price vs. actuations it'll get... hmm...

Me too, while the 50 1.2L is awesome, I'll wait for the VCM.
The 50 1.2L is too big, too expensive and too special for me.
But a great tool for those who need f/1.2 over f/1.4.

great, more unaffordable lenses. Man, does Canon know its customers needs.
LOL, what an inane comment. Did you say that because the 24/1.8 STM, 35/1.8 STM, 50/1.8 STM and 85/2 STM are out of your budget, or because you just don't know they exist?
Fully agree with neuro. But don't forget the 16/2.8 STM and 28/2.8 STM ;)

Don't expect 3 lines of lenses from Canon, like in the EF past.
There'll be the L for those that want/need the highest IQ and AF performance. But for a price, sure.
And the STM lenses for those who want consumer grade primes.

As a third option, you can look for the Sigma primes, if you're using an APS-C EOS R camera.
I hope that Tamron will join here soon, too.
