The Canon EOS R1 & Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z begin shipping this week

Picked up my R1 this morning. Looking forward to setting it up this evening once I am home from work.

I got a few minutes to play with The Camera Store's demo unit. It feels slightly largely than the R3 (obviously, it is), but overall is still very similar. The viewfinder, however, is quite an upgrade.

Adorama didn't ship anything :(
When I talked to someone from Sales they said they got their shipment of R1s mid-week but hadn't received any 70-200 Z's in either color.

I have an R1 on order from a local dealer and pinged him about a 70-200 Z and he told me, "that is weird, a white one just landed at our other store. Did I want it?"
Yes, of course. I bought it and it is getting shipped.
Then I got a call later that my R1 had arrived and so I'll pick it up tomorrow.

There's a good reason to support local stores instead of the big guys.
I got my R5 II kit a good 10 days before the official ship date.
They can always get bodies and lenses that are backordered pretty easily and if you are CPS card carrying member, even better.
Support your local store!

Got mine this afternoon. Took it out for a 15min quick stint at the local lake park. I have to say, coming from an R3... so far not that impressed. I hope the sports action priority for football (soccer) pays off! I'll have to be fair to it and give it some time and work through the settings (I just did a quick customization similar to what i have in the R3) and see how much the improved AF helps in my use case.FoP-20241114-untitled-553A2626-Enhanced-NR.jpg

Both batteries were completely dead and had to be charged, that's a first as usually they have some level of charge in them.

Can hear the IBIS working all the time even when off in the menus and no lens attached. Unless it's a fan noise which I doubt.

Just a note about the unlabeled ‘sensor’ on the back of the R1. It certainly looks to me like a tiny camera. If it was a fingerprint sensor or something similar, I’d expect it to be parallel to the back of the camera, but instead (behind the clear flat/flush window) it’s aimed at a slight upward angle, such that it points toward the face of the user.

My money is on a to-be-implemented facial recognition camera.

Has anyone else felt that the new packaging for both the R5 II and R 1 is some cheap assed shit compared with the previous generation?
Come on Canon, if Leica came make an Apple-like unboxing experience, you sure as hell can!

Both batteries?
The R3 and R1 only come with 1x LP-E19 (at least in California) and I've purchased 2x R3s and now 1x R1. The charger has 2 slots but I had to buy extra myself.

I found the packaging fine and was glad to see Canon use all paper in the packaging. Removing plastic is good for the environment. As long as the packaging prevents damage during shipping I don't really care about the aesthetics.

Two cameras, one battery each. Both without charge
The reason is obvious. Remember how everyone knew that the R3 was really supposed to be the R1? Well, actually the R1 was supposed to be the R3, but Canon panicked when Sony released the a1 and Canon knew the R1 couldn’t compete so they released the R3 first. Now that Sony has the a9 III and the a1 II is launching in days, Canon has just given up since they know now they can never compete. So they launched the R1 that they had planned to launch 3 years ago, since the only alternative would be to throw them into the ocean (with much worse environmental impact than some plastic packaging). All those boxes have been in the warehouse for the past three years, so the batteries are all dead.

[/tinfoil hat mode]

FYI, the battery with my R1 hit full charge in <3 hours, so clearly there was some charge in it.

Yeah but as a former Sony mirrorless shooter for years, the build quality of their gear is complete shite.
I dropped an A9 with a 70-200 F2.8 from hip height (missed the holster) onto grass and it bent the lens mount badly.
I had to send it to one place for service (Precision Camera) and only one in the US and it cost $750 to repair.
Nice sensors, world class sensors, but there's more to that needed to make a camera system.

I loved my D5. Shooting sports with a pair a D5 and D4S. I loved that the D5 had dual CFA cards back in the day :)

If you don't like it, I have an R3 I can swap. It's in LN- condition :)

Speaking of Apple packaging, I just unpacked a new Mac Pro... Truly amazing design and construction for the packaging.
