I think we’ve found the man responsible for the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III hoax from last week. He’s an Itallian vlogger named Breccia and he has a history of this sort of thing. He was behind the <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/09/28/leaked-slides-hint-might-ultra-pixel-phone-google/">Google Ultra Pixel hoax</a> in September as well as a PS4 Slim hoax before that.</p>
<p>If you check out the rear shots of the PowerShot G7 X Mark III images, you’ll see his name in the top left corner of the LCD.</p>

<p>Apparently he does these sorts of things to try and secure some sort of design work or perhaps increase those YouTube followers.</p>
<p>All of this rumor business is supposed to be fun, and after all the comments I received about the renders, I think a lot of fun and excitement was had, even if it didn’t last long. We’re not at all sour towards Breccia, we just wish the camera was actually real. It was a well done hoax that fooled some of us for a time and will actually make us look closer at leaked images in the future.</p>

Told you so!

There is an element of disappointment, however, as superficially it looked a really nice design. Too far removed from the house style of Canon however. It resembled the clean lines one would expect from a European company like Leica or Rollei. Oh well, back to waiting for the next G7X. If anyone from Canon is watching, could you please incorporate a pop-up EVR, thanks.

It's far easier to design a camera when you can care only about the shell, and you have no constraints given by all that hardware inside, lens size, movements, cooling, pressing, moulding and assembly lines needs etc. etc.

I do prefer ergonomics and functionality over pure design look. The G5X doesn't look ugly to me. It' a "busy" design, but it has a lot of physical controls too.

I do not like when the pursue of a stylish design for the sake of it hinders functionality. I don't need to show off with a camera. I need it to take good images without fighting with it.

i will never understand the desire for a dedicated EV +/- dial on top of a camera .. when any decent Canon EOS [with big rear wheel] provides immediate access to exposure comp ... to me a totally unnecessary doubling up of physical control points.

Not to mention other "follies" like those "retro Fuji or Nikon Df style" control layouts with single-purpose dedicated wheels for anything ... instead of digital-age, context-sensitive [Av, Tv, M] front and rear dials + fully user programmable interface. the former made sense ... back in the days of mechanical cameras and film. the latter is a much better UI for digital cameras.

Perhaps they have a dedicated dial on top because they don't have a wheel on the back? So where is the doubling up?
Some people don't want context-sensitive buttons. Some people will keep a button assigned to a task irrespective of use which means context-sensitivity is irrelevant.
But i guess the only opinion that matters is yours.

It's ok that you don't understand. Canon does, and I find the EC dial on top of my M6 quite handy.

I use the dial on my G7X II quite often, and I miss it when I use a DSLR. I probably wouldn't like more clutter on top of the latter, though. It's just that once used to it on one camera, I still miss it on the others. And, too, the reality of the situations when I'm using my travel camera do involve shooting more on the run, so to speak. And my DSLR shots are done more deliberately. The touch screen on the 6D2 helps a lot in accessing such things, so less need for more dedicated buttons and dials. Also, accessibility means that I'm more likely to make EC changes accidentally. I don't switch out of P mode very often (except for video), but when I do, I have to take care not to move the EC dial.

I considered all the constraints to make it feasible, the dimensions are absolutely the same, shells, assembly, everything is believable. It's just a different style 8)
The only thing that is hypothetical is the screen, the frame is very thin and the corners are smoothed, it may still possible but it will be very expensive.

It was believable - or you wouldn't have deceived so many people. Just, when you design a camera it has to work, be assembled at a reasonable price, and deliver the required usability. So you'll have constraints because of the "internals", which the outer shell has to allow for.

I don't believe, for example, that the protruding lens in the iPhone X is a specific design decision. I believe they would have gone for a full flat rear, it they could.

Just saying engineering a product is a more complex procedure than just designing the shell, it requires a strict collaboration among designers and engineers, and often some compromises are needed. As a photographer, I value usability and functionality over pure style.

For example, your reason to move the "chimping" button are debatable :) Especially since cameras usually already show the last photo taken for a configurable amount of time. The "delete" button is also usually under a little more protection to avoid unintentional deletes. The multifunction dial allows for enabling features quickly like the flash without the need to entering a menu system or reach for the touch screen, which may mean you have to move the fingers away from the shutter button.

That's why some concept could never materialize.

Yes, maybe too different - and that raised some more suspicions, many people didn't believe Canon could be so radical :D Even when Colani was asked to "reinvent" the camera bodies, the design had to be adapted to keep a consistent "brand feeling" and UI. But it is true the preliminary design by Canon internal team were much uglier.

Don't know, anyway, if this is the best way to promote oneself. Companies may be very jealous about their products designs and brands, and someone with a record of leaking images, even if fake ones, even for fun - or exactly because of that, may not have put himself under the proper light.
