I was noting the recent post of availability of R5 II bodies at major US outlets and was thinking about how long it has been since I made a major purchase. For me, it seems Canon is in a major lull of products (bodies or lenses) that appeal to my use cases. I shoot primarily landscape with some wildlife thrown in. I have an R5 and many RF and EF lenses that I adapt for my use.

I was noting in my B&H profile that it has been over 3 years since I made a major Canon purchase (body or L lens). This is by far the longest period with no major purchases for me in the past 20+ years. I have had 5 Canon bodies in that time and over 20 lenses (mostly Canon L). I am actually shedding equipment in hopes of upgrading either my R5 or some of my older EF L lenses when equivalent replacements are released. Doesn’t look like that will happen anytime soon.

Do a log plot - it will help relieve the symptoms.
Not really – antilogs between 0 and 1 are pretty easy to do mentally. But just for fun, I went the other direction and replotted the same >$1000 purchases by spend (technically, the R1 money hasn't been spent yet, but I'm counting on Canon to ship it this year).

It would take too much research to plot my past spending cycles but it seems to follow a pattern of body upgrade and huge cycle of lens purchases. That was certainly the case with the 5D Mark III, 5DSR and R5. The 5D cycle was lots of EF lens upgrades since that was moving from a 20D. The 5DSR was ultrawides and landscape lenses and the R5 was replacements of available RF lenses (24-70, 100-500, 100 Macro, extenders).

If they finally release a high MP R5 I hope they will support that release with some UWA lenses. The RF 100-300 has been calling my name but I await the 200-500 rumored release before I make a final decision on my telephoto replacement for the EF 600 F4 II.

It will either be a cheap 2024 and 2025 or a very expensive one!
