Sports Photographer using R3 with the Canon EF 400MM 2.8II lens

Hello everyone, I was just curious if anyone is experiencing what I have noticed using this combination. The EF400 lens seems to lose focus when I really need it to lock in. I am shooting out of AF Case 4. I have noticed sometimes the lens takes a little longer to get into focus. I seems like a speed thing more then the R3 thing. Im wondering if the RF lens is quicker? Is the tech in the EF 400 lens that much older which affects the focusing. Once the image is locked in the camera and lens combo works like no other. Beautiful images! Does anyone have different settings that help? This may or may not have been discussed before. I apologize for wasting anyone's time.

I have used the RF 400 mm f2.8 lens which is basically the EF 400 mm f2.8 III lens with a permanent RF adapter bolted on. I have not had any issues focusing. I can't tell you if the RF 400 mm f2.8 is faster. Could your EF to RF adapter be an issue? Maybe a weak connection? Sorry I am not of much assistance.

That could be a possibility. Didn't even think of that. I have two versions of the adapter. It can't hurt to try. Thank you for your help.

The RF lens is the EF MkIII with a permanent adapter as far as the optical elements are concerned. I'm not sure that's true for the focusing motors. Canon has highlighted that the RF 400/2.8 and 600/4 use Dual Power AF (which so far only the R3 can leverage, presumably the R1 will likewise).
