"Change or Charge Battery" Error or Bug with Canon R5 Mark II

Went to a photo trip in Canadian Rockies, and multiple Canon R5 Mark II displayed "Change or Charge Battery" error message randomly, even when a fully charged LP-E6P batter was inserted. It looks more like a bug to me as the temperature threshold in the battery control chip must have been set up too conservatively. Anyway, will report this issue to Canon and see how they respond.

This happened to me in the Scottish Isles at relatively low temperature and humidity (11 Degrees C). Only once with one battery and no further occurrences. This was with original firmware. No instances since upgrading to firmware 1.0.1.

Experienced same yesterday. 2-3 degrees centigrade outside, camera and battery stored outside few hours during travel so at same temperature.

Fw 1.0.1, with fully charged LP-E6P batteries.

First battery indicated 100% when powered on R5m2, but after 5 minutes got the “change or charge battery”-message. Next battery same thing happened. Warmed one battery in pocket for about 5 minutes, then it worked as normal.

Sent both cameras to Canon, and ended up with replacing motherboard for one of them. Interestingly, the one Canon said no issue identified had the same "Change or Charge Battery" error yesterday at a very normal temperature. It seems the issue could be with the battery itself, the brand new LP-E6P battery. Anyway, I am filing another repair ticket with Canon and see what they figure out.

Nevertheless, the new sensor of R5 Mark II works very well under low-light conditions, and I seem to have better night sky pictures despite constantly worrying about the cameras stopping for no reason while taking timelapse.

Which charger used when charging the LP-E6P?

Got my E6P’s from B&H very first batch. Initially used ProCube2 for charging, they then reached 93-96%, and experienced the error described.

Since then using stock charger they reach 100% and so far no problems after that, but have not had time to test much further.

I use a stock charger but in addition I use a 3rd party dual battery charger which changes plates. It is very versatile since it can use car's 12V socket.

I never had any issues with NON R5-II cameras (R5, R7, 5DMkIV, 5DsR). The batteries were E6N and E6NH. It should work with E6P too (not a guess just wish). Also 93 to 96% is too good to cause camera to display an error. Anyway a 100% charged battery will fall eventually to the percentages mentioned.

I'm working in Churchill, MB as a polar bear viewing guide and I have the same issue. I put three different fully charged batteries into the R5 ii, one after a time, only to have it show an empty battery symbol and tell me to replace the battery.

If I turn it off, and plug a PD USB charger I to the phone, I see the full battery icon on the LCD of the camera. If I leave it charging for a while, directly via USB, it seems to operate again.

This really sucks.

From Alaska here.. shooting with the bg-r20 I’m currently getting 45-55 minutes (whether shooting or not). Thinking maybe if the battery was in the main body housing it’d get a little heat and last longer, so I tried without using the battery grip. The one battery has never lasted more than 30 minutes before it says to replace the battery. My r5mk1.. 1 battery lasts over 6 hours in the same conditions. The mark ii is inoperable in cold-ish weather; I’m praying it’s addressed by canon somehow. 100% disappointed

After about 100 landscape pictures using EVF, only a few LCD or EVF picture checks, and a fully charged battery which had gone through several cycles while configuring the camera: 6% charge left...
I'm not a slow photographer, only a few seconds per pic.
Never had a camera discharging batteries so quickly.
When I went for a walk with the R, using it the same way, 85 to 90% of the battery charge were left...
Therefore, I'll be waiting for the next firmware to address this issue. If it doesn't: Service!

Just a test: Can anyone having this issue use temporarily fully charged E6NH batteries with the R5II in the same conditions?

Not for permanent use of course but just to see if the issue is the new battery or the new camera.

In my case: absolutely identical behavior. Unfortunately...

Potentially related to this. I am having an issue where the camera won't allow the full high speed electronic first stage shutter to hit full speed. The H+ icon is white not green and it's a slower shutter speed.

When I take the battery out, hold it in my hands and close to my body for a few minutes, pop it back in I get the full speed with the H+ icon turning green again. The thing is that this is occurring in 15C+ temps (even indoors at 20C+). It's happening with two R5 MkII bodies and multiple of my LP-E6P batteries.

It could be un-related but it does seem to be a bit of overlap.

I have only seen the speed icon turn green when using a flash and 1st curtain. I believe mine is normally white when not using a flash. But to be honest I may not be paying close enough attention and/or I’m almost always fully electronic when shooting for fps without a flash.

I also started noticing strange behaviour as soon as temperatures went sub-freezing. For the past two days I have had various levels of battery depletion while the camera was sleeping in temps from about 19F to about 26. I had no issues with battery performance vs the R5 in warmer temperatures. Have tested with 2 LP-E6P so far, but I haven't tried older variants. I reached out to Canon and awaiting a reply.
