I am having what appears to be communication issues between the R3 and the 100-500.

I will get a red square and it will not focus, if I pull the battery, or sometimes I just move the focus point and it recovers.

I use this lens on 2 R5 bodies and my R6 mk 2 with out issues

I use the R3 with all my other glass without issues.

Canon is shipping me a loaner kit while they look in to this but they claim to have never seen or heard of this before.
Has anyone had a similar experience? What was the fix?

All firmware is up to date.

thanks!

Kiton,

After I reading your post I threw my 100-500 on the R3 and tested it. I've used it many times before with this setup so I didn't anticipate any challenges.

I grabbed frames in single point, AF tracking and eye tracking. Wildlife, humans and objects it worked correctly. Images are sharp and the focus points were accurate in DPP.

That being said, I am still running firmware version 1.7.1

Good luck on getting resolution.

I have not experienced this myself, and I may be stating the obvious, but the first thing I would do is look at the contact points on my R3 and clean them even if they look clean. Even if it is just wiping them with a microfiber cloth.

I had cleaned them, but will take a pencil eraser to them tonight to extra sure

I got the new 70-200 ver 2 today, first assignment was a protest / march, lost the focus for a few seconds 3 times. So not reserved to the 100-500 as I first thought. Body is heading off to Canon.
