We continue to hear rumblings about the Canon EOS R6 Mark III being announced later in 2024. If it comes in November or December, that’s two years since the EOS R6 Mark II, which was announced just over two years after the EOS R6.

We still think that Canon will concentrate on releasing and meeting demand for the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II and the EOS R6 Mark III will come in early 2025. However, multiple sources claim that it is indeed coming this year.

Specifications have been scarce at this point in time, but we have been told multiple times that it will get some version of the Canon EOS R3 image sensor. Which would put the EOS R6 Mark III comfortably atop it’s market segment sensor wise. Though Sony may have some plans in that regard.

We were also told to expect frame rates for stills to increase significantly. Which probably means a CFexpress Type B slot is coming to the EOS R6 Mark III. Maybe the EOS R6 series is going to take a bigger step into the sports and hybrid market.

Nikon recently announced the Nikon Z6 III and some people raised a stink due to this sensor performance test. That’s just one test on the internet that most of us probably wouldn’t notice in the real world photography wise, perhaps the video people would notice the dynamic range differences?

The Nikon Z6 III has surpassed the EOS R6 Mark II in a lot of areas, especially in video capabilities. It sports 12bit internal video recording, versus 10bit, significantly higher frame-rates in both 4K and 1080p. Both cameras will shoot RAW video, but the Nikon can do it internally. The EVF is also significantly better in the Z6 III.

The are many other specifications of the Z6 III that are certainly impressive. I find the -8.5EV autofocus capability to be very cool. If you’re wondering about the EOS R3?, It’s rated at -7.5EV.

We also expect Sony to announce an a7 V in 2024. It will certainly be well equipped and very capable.

Maybe there’s something to the EOS R6 Mark III coming sooner than we expect. We have stopped rating posts with the [CR] system, sources have changed and we’re a bit more open about information that is outside of our comfort zone. Though the sources we have used for this article have been correct well in advanced in the past.

Take the EOS R6 Mark III coming in 2024 with the proverbial grain of salt. We still think it’s an Q1 2025 camera announcement.

  1. R8II with CFe is what I wish for, although I feel zero need to replace my R8, especially if I decide to get the R5II.

But still, a compact body like the R8 with CFe and a fast(er) sensor would be great.
  2. I´ve posted several times on this forum that I believe a R6mkiii is very close (most people just smiled/ laughed at me), so it wouldn't be a surprise for me at all. R6/ Z6/ A7 line sells in volumes and there are a lot of "entry-kind-of-people" who do compare a lot before they enter a camera system/ brand, so keeping that line up to date is essential.

I doubt R8ii will be soon. R8 can consume R6ii's CMOS for next 2~3 years.

0.8 stops of DR difference between the Z6III and Z6II will be noticeable when shooting landscapes, albeit marginally. But it's a 1.5 stop difference between the Z6III and R3 which is quite big. If Canon R6III has the same sensor as the R3, it'll beat Nikon in dynamic range by quite a noticeable margin.

It'll be interesting to see how Nikon suddenly lags behind in the dynamic range race!
  5. 2 years is a quick update cycle for canon… has any body been updated twice in 4 years before? Maybe a rebel?
Raiding the spare parts bin is the obvious way to do it. Releasing a R6iii + R1 + R5ii in 2H24 is a good catchup from zilch in 1H24
  6. Guessing time for R6iii CMOS:
    1. Brand new fast FSI/BSI CMOS
    2. nerfed CMOS from R3
    3. R5's CMOS with retune, probably lowest cost solution for Canon and fullfill the needs from the internet. High MP, good burst, good AF, 4K120

This is a trend since R6 mark 1, Sony a7m series is every 3 years.
  8. I'm jonesing hard for an R3 at the moment. Always wanted an integrated grip body. 24mp is plenty for me. I have an R5 too for high res stuff if needed. But holding out to see the R5II and R1. R1 is probably not going to be my thing - the R3 will do what I want it to do at a fraction of the price is my guess, and for an R1 to be my 'forever' camera and justify the price I'd want something in the 30+mp range. But R5II could be interesting. But now R6III? They really like to string a guy along! lol.

  9. If only it got a top LCD, I would use it as a second body, along my future R5 II. I'd hate having to look thru the EVF or at the rear LCD in order to check my main settings. It's so much easier from above.
"Only" 24 MP? No issue at all.
    If not, R5 II X 2. :)

Is Canon having the cashback promotions in your area right now? If so, have a look if that brings the price in line with your GAS threshold :)

Don't you have the dial set to 'A'wesome or 'P'erfect the whole time?!?!?
  12. . . . because there's always room for another 24MP camera! It's a competitive segment of the market, but Sony still has a resolution edge with the R7IV and R7Cii (and R7V?) being 33MP. Odd situation . . . Canon and Nikon going for the video shooters and Sony ruling the stills segment. (I am accustomed to this being the other way around.)
  13. It'll be interesting to see how Nikon suddenly lags behind in the dynamic range race!
We shall not discuss that. Now that Canon is ahead on DR, and with Sony bringing us a global shutter that costs DR at base ISO, the trolls have moved on from DR and so should we. Right?

Now, MP matters most. I mean it didn't when Canon had the highest MP FF sensors. But now it's a whole different story. MP >> DR.
  14. Hoping for the C70ii announcement soon.

Wishing for a C50/C60. A mini C70/C400 version. A true cinema compact B cam. With one mini XLR input, etc...
C70ii/C50/C60 with the Sigma lineup, 35L and the Z lenses will be an interesting & strong setup up
  15. It's been less that two years since the R6II was announced, and just under 4 years since the OG R6.

I'm not complaining but... it's just very unlike Canon to refresh a body this frequently.
Guess they're moving a ton of units and see the need to keep up with competitors in the same price range to keep it that way.
  16. The R3's are a remarkable camera. I use them for weddings. It's like a cheat code for skin tones and WB. In my opinion, the R5's that we had prior produced the worst tones of any camera we shot with in our lifetimes.
It's phenomenal, I shoot weddings (both stills and video) with it and it's an absolute powerhouse.

Super easy to manage colour in LR and the C-Log 3 grades super well after a Rec.709 conversion.
Also I can comfortably film a 10 hour wedding on 3 internal batteries, pretty much unheard of for hybrid bodies.
