We continue to hear rumblings about the Canon EOS R6 Mark III being announced later in 2024. If it comes in November or December, that’s two years since the EOS R6 Mark II, which was announced just over two years after the EOS R6.
We still think that Canon will concentrate on releasing and meeting demand for the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II and the EOS R6 Mark III will come in early 2025. However, multiple sources claim that it is indeed coming this year.
Specifications have been scarce at this point in time, but we have been told multiple times that it will get some version of the Canon EOS R3 image sensor. Which would put the EOS R6 Mark III comfortably atop it’s market segment sensor wise. Though Sony may have some plans in that regard.
We were also told to expect frame rates for stills to increase significantly. Which probably means a CFexpress Type B slot is coming to the EOS R6 Mark III. Maybe the EOS R6 series is going to take a bigger step into the sports and hybrid market.
Nikon recently announced the Nikon Z6 III and some people raised a stink due to this sensor performance test. That’s just one test on the internet that most of us probably wouldn’t notice in the real world photography wise, perhaps the video people would notice the dynamic range differences?
The Nikon Z6 III has surpassed the EOS R6 Mark II in a lot of areas, especially in video capabilities. It sports 12bit internal video recording, versus 10bit, significantly higher frame-rates in both 4K and 1080p. Both cameras will shoot RAW video, but the Nikon can do it internally. The EVF is also significantly better in the Z6 III.
The are many other specifications of the Z6 III that are certainly impressive. I find the -8.5EV autofocus capability to be very cool. If you’re wondering about the EOS R3?, It’s rated at -7.5EV.
We also expect Sony to announce an a7 V in 2024. It will certainly be well equipped and very capable.
Maybe there’s something to the EOS R6 Mark III coming sooner than we expect. We have stopped rating posts with the [CR] system, sources have changed and we’re a bit more open about information that is outside of our comfort zone. Though the sources we have used for this article have been correct well in advanced in the past.
Take the EOS R6 Mark III coming in 2024 with the proverbial grain of salt. We still think it’s an Q1 2025 camera announcement.

But still, a compact body like the R8 with CFe and a fast(er) sensor would be great.
It'll be interesting to see how Nikon suddenly lags behind in the dynamic range race!
Raiding the spare parts bin is the obvious way to do it. Releasing a R6iii + R1 + R5ii in 2H24 is a good catchup from zilch in 1H24
1. Brand new fast FSI/BSI CMOS
2. nerfed CMOS from R3
3. R5's CMOS with retune, probably lowest cost solution for Canon and fullfill the needs from the internet. High MP, good burst, good AF, 4K120

"Only" 24 MP? No issue at all.
If not, R5 II X 2. :)
Now, MP matters most. I mean it didn't when Canon had the highest MP FF sensors. But now it's a whole different story. MP >> DR.
Wishing for a C50/C60. A mini C70/C400 version. A true cinema compact B cam. With one mini XLR input, etc...
I'm not complaining but... it's just very unlike Canon to refresh a body this frequently.
Guess they're moving a ton of units and see the need to keep up with competitors in the same price range to keep it that way.
Super easy to manage colour in LR and the C-Log 3 grades super well after a Rec.709 conversion.
Also I can comfortably film a 10 hour wedding on 3 internal batteries, pretty much unheard of for hybrid bodies.
I've used "A" for only 2 weeks, after right-hand surgery.
