MELVILLE, N.Y., June 5, 2024 — Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today a variety of firmware updates for key models in its Cinema EOS and professional camcorder line of cameras, including the EOS C500 Mark II, EOS C300 Mark III, EOS C70, EOS R5 C cameras and the XA75/70, XA65/60 and VIXIA HF G70 camcorders. All updates are a direct result of customer feedback and will be available through a free download at the end of June 2024.

Highlights for each of the Canon products:

EOS C500 Mark II/ EOS C300 Mark III Cameras

  • “Sensor Mode” will be saved to an assignable button on the camera body to quickly change between Full-frame, Super 35mm and Super 16mm crop modes.
  • The Focus Guide box will have two size options: Standard and Large (approximately two times larger than standard).
  • Camera LCD screen will display a playback marker in Media Mode.
  • For the EOS C300 Mark III camera:
    • Cinema RAW Light HQ/ST/LT recording modes will be added.
    • Auto ISO/Gain functions that can be operated from the camera menu, an assignable button, or with a compatible remote-control unit will be added.

EOS C70/EOS R5 C Cameras

  • Same Focus Guide and playback marker enhancements as the C500 Mark II and C300 Mark III cameras will be added.
  • Option of assigning functions to the select dial on the back of the camera, including AF subject selection, shutter, iris, ISO/gain, and white balance mode will be added.
  • For the EOS R5 C camera, the following will be added:
    • Ability to adjust the thickness of the AF frame, making it easier to see in certain lighting conditions
    • Ability to reset the AF position by pushing the joystick or set buttons
    • When shooting RAW VR content with Canon’s dual fisheye lens, you will be able to record both the peripheral illumination and chromatic aberration data. This will help with processing footage into smoother and even more amazing VR content than before the firmware update.
    • New features from the March 2024 R5 firmware update.

XA75/70, XA65/60 and VIXIA HF G70 Camcorders

  • Option to view the date and time in the on-screen display (OSD) while recording will be added. White balance will be able to be changed while recording.

  1. R5 C firmware - This is very nice. I just ran into the AF Frame centering issue last weekend at a family members wedding. I intuitively pressed the set and joystick buttons and realized. nope. This feature will be great. Have to wait until the end of the month, darn.

Thanks for reporting this Richard !!!
  2. I don’t see where they added firmware support for physically compatible EL-5 flash to the R5 C. WTF, Canon?
Thats right. They never did. The MFS is extremely underutilized on this body. The Tascam XLR audio input is about all you get. Support for the EL-5 never happened, and it doesn't look like it will happen for the EL-10 either. No idea why. I'm still using an old flash.

No wireless controls for R5C is crazy given they are already in the photo side. Even allowing video to be transferred on the photo side would be something. Sigh
I never understood this either. you cannot even use the CC APP for simple control, start or stop recording. I never expected transfer ability. You have to buy the $1k battery grip with ethernet and use browser remote which is ridiculous. I suspect its all related to power consumption, but with USB-C PD or V-Mount it shouldn't be an issue.

I've made multiple feature requests the last 2 years. We did get the ability to disable channel 3/4 audio on the internal mics when using an external mic. I never really cared about being able to use the Quick Control dial for subject selection or ISO, but I'll take it. It does make sense after the subject tracking (face and head detection) additions were added. The focus guide was already good. I've never seen what the one on the C500 looks like. I want to know what other stuff will be included that comes in part from the v2.0 R5 march update.

    1. Enables servo zooming to be remotely controlled from EOS Utility or Camera Connect when Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E2/PZ-E2B is attached to a compatible lens.
-This was expected for the 24-105Z and zoom motor add-ons

    2. Enables up to 2 TB to be used on CFexpress cards larger than 2 TB. - My videos aren't this large, so I don't use this this support.

    3. Fixes an issue that may cause the camera, in rare instances, to experience a delayed restart after the camera has gone into Auto Power Off.
    - I've never experienced this.

    4. Fixes an issue that, under specific circumstances, may prevent the image from being displayed in the viewfinder or on the screen causing the camera to stop operating, or Error Code 70 may be displayed. - Never experienced this either

    5. Fixes minor issues.

The R5 C is still a great camera. I knew what I was buying and am grateful for the additions, but I do believe Canon could do more.

Yes it really odd, the whole lineup supports the canon multi-camera control app.
I’ve tried to find the feature request link to canon (yes I know, very optimistic) does anyone here know where that might be?

Unfortunately, it's a hardware issue and the unique way the two sets of firmware are implemented.

if you press the trashcan it resets to center; been that way since the beginning.

The R5C already had this feature by pressing the delete key. It's not well known though.
