Earlier this month, Canon announced that they would be releasing new firmware for the EOS R5 C, Cinema EOS C70, Cinema EOS C300 Mark III, Cinema EOS C500 Mark II as well as some of the professional camcorders.
Canon USA has officially released the firmware updates for the above cameras.
Firmware: Canon EOS R5 C & Canon Cinema EOS C70
- Same Focus Guide and playback marker enhancements as the C500 Mark II and C300 Mark III cameras will be added.
- Option of assigning functions to the select dial on the back of the camera, including AF subject selection, shutter, iris, ISO/gain, and white balance mode will be added.
- For the EOS R5 C camera, the following will be added:
- Ability to adjust the thickness of the AF frame, making it easier to see in certain lighting conditions
- Ability to reset the AF position by pushing the joystick or set buttons
- When shooting RAW VR content with Canon’s dual fisheye lens, you will be able to record both the peripheral illumination and chromatic aberration data. This will help with processing footage into smoother and even more amazing VR content than before the firmware update.
- New features from the March 2024 R5 firmware update.
Firmware: Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark III & Canon Cinema EOS C500 Mark II
- “Sensor Mode” will be saved to an assignable button on the camera body to quickly change between Full-frame, Super 35mm and Super 16mm crop modes.
- The Focus Guide box will have two size options: Standard and Large (approximately two times larger than standard).
- Camera LCD screen will display a playback marker in Media Mode.
- For the EOS C300 Mark III camera:
- Cinema RAW Light HQ/ST/LT recording modes will be added.
- Auto ISO/Gain functions that can be operated from the camera menu, an assignable button, or with a compatible remote-control unit will be added.
Firmware: Canon XA60/65, Canon XA70/75 and VIXIA HF G70
- Option to view the date and time in the on-screen display (OSD) while recording will be added. White balance will be able to be changed while recording.

My camera has never failed to resume from sleep. Never not displayed an image in the viewfinder or LCD, etc.
I will admit that I did not know you could press the trash can button to move the one shot focus point back to center. I thought this was going to be a great addition and then others mentioned to me in another thread I could press the delete button. I must have used it in the last 2 years but didn't remember. Being able to press the joystick though will be helpful muscle memory.
Mapping aperture to the quick control dial on the back is definitely welcome since you could do that on the C70 from the get-go.
It doesn't look like we'll ever get EL-5 or EL-10 flash support.
I remain very happy with my R5 C. As with previous updates, I'm grateful for any features that get added.
You have to remember that the R5 C has two different sets of firmware. One for EOS R, one for Cinema EOS. Its a pretty unique camera in that regard and why you get things on the stills side that you don't get for the cinema side.
I'm of the belief that the R5 C development started at the tail end of the R5 development and they had to figure out a way to make it work (and keep the margins nice and get it to market ASAP).
Basically, there were two software teams thrown together into one camera. The Cinema EOS team had to make things work with this EOS R camera that they didn't have much to do with as far as hardware development goes. It's pretty much an R5 with a fan, and sans IBIS.
The Cinema EOS team likely didn't have to deal with a "set" button in the past. Who knows how button mapping works on the engineering side of things?
Annoyances aside, the R5 C is a pretty badass camera.
I don't expect that level of separation to continue into the next generation of cameras.
Thr R5C may have the mulifunction shoe, but it's not the full implementation. The R5 framework is the limiting factor. Its there to make the Tascam stuff work.... Annoying for sure.
Maybe they could access them via the mode or another button in the future rather than without power of/on.
Switching between stills and cinema mode has been a non issue since 1.0.4.1. However because of the pixelshift bug, Canon pulled 1.0.4.1 and released 1.0.5.1 a week later. It had the same enhancements without the bug. Pixelshift is not supported on the R5 C because it doesn't have ibis. It's another non issue as the feature is not widely used, even by many R5 owners. This is because it renders in .jpg.
Before 1.0.4.1 there was a solid 8-9 sec delay when switching between modes. After 1.0.4.1 (Technically 1.0.5.1) it's about 2-3 secs. In real world use, I can switch between modes and I'm ready to shoot before I can raise the camera to my eye. So again, a non issue.
Cinema OS is very different from Canons photo OS. It has double or in some cases 3 times the number of menu items by comparison. The scale of the menus and fonts are even smaller so they can fit everything together. It took a little time, but I'm comfortable in both now. 2 yrs later it continues to improve thanks to the updates, I definitely agree it gets my badass rating. I really enjoy it.
