So we were wrong, they aren’t doing lens announcements in November, they’re going to announce 3 new lenses on October 30, 2024. We have already told you what the next lenses would be, but we’ll remind you!

Lenses to be announced October 30, 2024

  • Canon RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM
  • Canon RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM
  • Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z (We can confirm it works with teleconverters)

The above teaser is from the Canon USA instagram account.

What about the RF 200-500mm f/4L IS USM? We’re still hearing November for that one, likely around the time the EOS R1 begins shipping in late November. We hope to hear more about when that masterpiece will make an appearance.

  1. I am looking forward to the 50 mm f1.4 as well, but undecided on the 70-200 mm f2.8. Still hoping that Canon announces the 200-500 mm f4 later in November when the R1 ships.
  2. So curiously the reflection of what is probably the 70-200 in the teaser seems to show a white lens, so I guess they may have decided on that color (vs offering both)
  3. Looking forward to the 50 f/1.4, I’d really like something better than the 50STM, but smaller/lighter/cheaper than the f/1.2.
I’d expect it to be a lens with a few compromises, like the 35mm f/1.4 VCM.

    — They gave us a cheap option (f/1.8)
    — They gave us fully-photography-oriented (f/1.2) lens
    — And now now they’ll give us an intermediate hybrid solution

Do we think that the 70-200 mm f2.8 will be compatible with TCs?
    Yes, we do think so

I’d say it’s black, but it would be nice to have both options

  4. Do we think that the 70-200 mm f2.8 will be compatible with TCs? For me, it would have to in order to justify a purchase.
Almost certainly. My understanding is that it will be a more "traditional" 70-200mm design meaning it won't have the same limitations as the controversial compact 70-200mm. For me, the compact RF 70-200mm is the first 70-200mm that I've actually used significantly primarily due to its compact design.

I don't know what 'we' think but I think it will be, at least that's what the backfocus distance in the published patent suggests.
  6. Wonder what lenses come after this. Will we see later next year a 16mm 1.4 VCM, 85mm 1.4 VCM, 105mm 1.4 VCM? Idk, all i know is i'm in love with my 35mm 1.4 for it's size and low light performance for video. Can't go wrong going lighter and internal zoom!
  7. The 24 f/1.4 is much desired. I like the current 24 f/1.8 STM but it definitely has its flaws and needs to be replaced by an L series version. Really hoping for a 14 f/1.4 or something similar coming.
  8. I can already hear the wailing. The 50mm won't be small enough compared to the competition. Or it won't be big enough. If the 70-200 lens aimed at video can't take a TC, the cries will be heard at the corners of the Earth. Its a fixed zoom that isnt as compact as the collapsing design - this display of Canon's continued wanton malice towards its consumers, and continued compliance with the laws of physics will force many to Sony or Nikon.

I'm sure in use they'll all be quite good. I have the 24mm 1.8, which I like for is small size and macro function. But I'll have to see what this 24mm L has to offer. Still rocking my Sigma 50mm Art - no reason to upgrade that one. Maybe some good deals will be had on the external zoom 70-200s and I'll finally add one to my bag.
