TESDO sat down with the development team of the Canon RF 24-105 F2.8L IS USM Z, and they aren’t done with the landmark lenses that have never been done before.
There was a time when Canon’s lens development was pretty conservative and couldn’t do a good wide angle if they tried (and they did try, just not good). However, these days, whatever issues Canon once had with optical design are decidedly in the past. They can do it all – wide angle, normal, and telephoto. As well, they are now releasing lenses “because we can”.
According to the development when they were asked
This is a bit off-topic from the RF24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z, but what kind of products does Canon have planned to develop in the future?
Kengo Iezuka of the IMG First Division of the Imaging Business Headquarters, who was in charge of planning the len responded;
Since Canon announced the EOS R system for mirrorless cameras in 2018, we have released about 40 interchangeable lenses. However, there are still many lenses that have not been released to the world. I can’t talk about the specifics, but there are lenses with basic specifications, and lenses with specifications that have never been seen before and that no one can imagine yet. We would like to develop these in a balanced way.
It seems that Canon is moving forward and planning on releasing more halo lenses that no one has done before, and that’s good news for us.
What lenses would you like to see that has never been done before? I am thinking that a 12mm or 14mm F1.2L with excellent aberration control would have a lot of people jumping up and down, but other than that, I’m at a loss. Maybe a 70-135mm F1.8?
Let me know what you all think, I’m very curious

17-55 2.8 IS? Others? 15-85 3.5-5.6?
If past is prologue Canon will not manufacture all that many RF-S \'enthusiast\' lenses.

FYI: I\'m having difficulty accessing the Forums here on CR. I hope it is just me?!
That doesn't sound like a Z type halo lens though, and I doubt an APS-C lens would be on the list for the esoteric lens design that has never been done before.
I had first had that on the article, and then realized with a 100mm front element, that it's simply not ever going to happen.
which is why i changed it to be a 70-135mm

Yes. I'm not sure if anyone can read that that is experiencing the issues - but log off and log back on again seems to clear it up for some people.
We're working on it with support as we speak here.
Thanks for following up on it.
Something like 14mm or 16mm with f1.4 or f1.2 for nightscapes
Then a standard zoom walkaround that goes a bit wider:
18-70mm f4 or 20-105mm f4
Maybe a f4 version of the 100-400mm lens
A 70-300mm f4 lens
Shift versions of zoom lenses, for architecture and landscapes.
16-30mm shift
24-70mm shift
BUT!
It has to be as good wide open as the Sigma 135 ART.
And it should have a filter slot for the drop-in filters from the
respective mount converter or should start a new series of
lenses with unified filters similar to these.
The performance of the Sigma 135 ART with a Meike Black Mist 1/8
inside the filter slot is absolutely amazing.
The lenses that Canon is missing:
RF 24-70L f/4 (should be smaller & betterer than RF 24-105, like the EF version)
RF 70-300L
Sticking to 24, but maybe extend to 120 seems easier to achieve.
After all, Nikon is successful in these.
While I used both systems side by side, I'd use that quite often
on the Nikons.
