In this patent application (2024-076793), Canon shows off some embodiments of some lenses with internal zoom and focusing. The first embodiment that I’m going to talk about is a constant 60mm in lens length and a constant F4 aperture 12-30mm lens. The APS-C lens lineup hardly ever gets this kind of love, so it would be nice to see if Canon would do lenses like this.

Back Focus Distance12.13 12.13 12.13

Also in the patent application was a curious full frame (with a fair amount of image stretching) 20-40mm.

As with all Canon patent applications this may never end up in an actual product, but every now and then, we can dare to dream.

  1. It doesn't really fit my needs (not wide enough to be my wideangle zoom, not long enough to be my "normal-zoom"). But still a lens patent I applause. Much more interesting than the RF-S lenses Canon have actually released so far. Good to see Canon also looks at other things than cheapest lightweight (and dark) "digital rebel" zooms.
I guess vloggers would like something like this?
  2. What\'s the point of RF 20-40mm F/4? Sony make 20-70 f/4. Even Panasonic 20-60 f/3.5-5.6 is more versatile. Similarly, RF-S 12-30mm is rather short. They could make it 40mm.

Size, weight and cost. Canon has clearly been prioritizing smaller/lighter/cheaper standard zooms for APS-C and, for example, paired with the R8.
  4. I love crop as my go-to everyday carry cams. That said, I dont dont find these formulas interesting at all. Especially on crop, wider apertures are so valuable because your already dealing with limited dof. 1.4 on crop (thanks sigma) is just so great to have and use.

12-30..not wide enough (11 should be minimum) and doesn't go far enough. F4-6.3 version is completely DOA.

Also 20-40 on ff is good for some as well, just too weird for me if not a 2.8.

At least they are thinking about it. They could have done so much more with the M, and I still love my M gear. Even the build quality of the lenses was very solid, metal mounts, etc.
