Meike, a Hong Kong based manufacturer of cinema lenses, stills lenses and adapters at very affordable prices appears to be suggesting that they’re going to be releasing APS-C autofocus lenses for the RF mount.

Meike’s first autofocus lens was announced in 2018 with their 85mm f/1.8. You could get this lens for both EF and F mounts. Since that time, Meike has released another 2 lenses for the EF mount as well as 6 lenses for various mirrorless mounts such as X, E and Z.

In August of 2023, Meike showed off the AF 85mm f/1.4 and mentioned the RF mount in their press package, but it has only been released for E, Z and L mounts. It is a full-frame lens, so the fact that the RF mount version hasn’t been released shouldn’t come as a surprise.

This past week, Meike released a video for their AF 55mm f/1.8 PRO Series lens, and appears to have teased that they’ll be one of the next third-party lens manufactuers to get the go-ahead from Canon to start manufacturing autofocus lenses for the mount.

We have queued up the video up to the 1:00 mark when the tease happens.

Meike lenses are very affordable and don’t directly complete with SIGMA or Tamron, but could become a good entry level option for APS-C shooters looking for fast prime lenses with autofocus.

From a price/value standpoint, Meike autofocus lenses seem to be well received.

55mm F1.4 APS-C STM Features

  • Diaphragm Blades: 9
  • Weight: about 286g
  • Focus Mode: Auto Focus
  • Adoption of 8 groups and 11 pieces of optical structure, built-in low-wave and high-lens lenses
  • Multi-layer coating technology is used on both sides, 1 ED lens, 2 higt refraction lens, effective control of ghosting, dispersion and flare.
  • Resistance to flare is good.

  1. They are confusingly teasing with the R10 crop-body, but otherwise the video is showing a Meike AF 55mm f/1.8 Pro series autofocus full-frame lens.

So looks like they are teasing this:

    and not this?:

    Or did I miss something?

It was me, not you. They have a 55mm for APS-C (along with a 33mm), but they don't list it as "PRO" on their web site. It's all a bit confusing. The tease is legitimate though.

That said, 3 pricing tiers of third-party AF lenses would be a cool thing. I haven't used a Meike lens as of yet.

I have the APS-C lens for my Fuji X-T5 and I can confirm it’s a brilliant little lens…aside from the cheap plastic build quality and junk lens hood. Optically, it’s great. The autofocus (no surprise) performs better than the Sigma 56mm and the first version of the Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2…which had notoriously poor AF so they didn’t bother to improve it in the second generation, naturally.

    Thanks for pointing that out.
    Best they'd bring both ;)

  5. gimmie gimmie.

oh wait i dont\' have a RF-S camera. the R50 was nice, but #$(*&#$()@ i kept on hitting the buttons accidentally.
Let's hope for an R60 or R50 MkII with better ergonomics - and a real hot shoe - and a better kit tele zoom - and a better kit standard zoom - and an RF-S 22 - and... :p
Better let's redo the whole APS-C lineup. But you mentioned that in a different thread ;)

    :p I did!

I didn't think the R50 would bother me that much having been a season EOS-M user, but the "quasi wheel thing" would turn it into continuous shooting mode - like every 10 minutes lol.

I am wondering if it was because the R50 had a decent grips and the M's really did not so I was holding the R50 more like a camera versus how I held the M's.

Craig handing me the 28-70 F2L to hang off the R50 certainly didn't help that too much lol
  7. I've almost bought a manual Meike lens a couple of times because they are so low priced, just for fun. Then, I figured my old Takumars, etc. were enough manual lenses for me. Mike has a bad optical performance reputation, but it's not fair to compare them to far more expensive lenses. They are what they are and sometimes people enjoy less than perfect glass.

Got one for RF mount today. Seems like it's an illegal Asian version(Vistilen=Meike).

As you can see it looks somewhat similar to RF50f1.2. Sharpness looks acceptable, color feels yellowish but correctable. But I did just some quick tests so I need to shoot it more. AF motor is okayish. No focus hold button, no control-ring. Aperture ring works fine. Weight with caps is 783 grams.

If no critical issue arises I will keep it until some better 85f1.4 arrives to RF-ecosystem.
