Yodobashi Camera has posted its latest ranking report for September. Now, this is just one of the largest retailers in Japan, so it’s a pretty significant look at what prosumer and professional camera users are purchasing there.

Canon took four places overall, with the R6 Mark II and the R5 Mark II in first and second place, respectively. I assume that the R6 Mark II is placing high because it’s on sale right now. It’s even more significant that the R5 Mark II is selling well, as it’s just the R5 Mark II and the Sony FX3 that have cracked the top 10 as over $3500 camera bodies.

The Sony VLOGCAM ZV-E10 II kit continues to sell well, and Canon are you listening? We need a competitive small mirrorless camera without the EVF bump. Notably, Nikon is also shut out of the rankings.

But this is a good report for Canon, so let’s not dwell on Sony. The overall rankings from 1 to 10 are as follows;

  1. Canon EOS R6 Mark II Body
  2. Canon EOS R5 Mark II Body
  3. Sony VLOGCAM ZV-E10 II Double Zoom Lens
  4. Sony α7C II Body
  5. Sony α7C II Zoom Lens
  6. Canon EOS R50 Double Zoom Kit
  7. Sony α7 IV Body
  8. Sony FX3 Body
  9. Canon EOS R10 RF-S18-150 IS STM Lens
  10. Fujifilm X-T50 XC15-45mm Lens Kit

  1. R6m2 is not a wonder when looking at Instagram posts from India. It seems every second Indian is a "professional" photographer. Most of them own R6m2 now.
Keep in mind that anything you view on instagram is brought to you by "The Algorithm", which has likely tagged you for liking photography. Also, if you want to attract clients, you aren't going to put "unprofessional photographer" in your bio ;)

Thank you, sir. I completely understand how it works, I'm a developer. BTW I was looking for "Canon R6 Mark II" intentionally there. I don't remember if I put any word specifying the region. Instead, I got gazillion of photos from India. Some of them were kinda OK for the local market, some with "forced creativity" that looks pathetic, to be honest. My favorite scenes are shots with photogear boxes, sellers, and sometimes whole families of those who purchased them. I think you've got the idea it's something that does not require to put "unprofessional photographer" in their bio.
Just in case. You shouldn't treat my comment as aggressive, bullying, or something of that kind. Just a matter of fact.

I wonder if it's something specific to India, I remember being in Brazil 15 years ago and a lot of the people I worked with had point and shoot cameras. But thanks to the protectionism of the Brazil market, imports would get heavily taxed, which led to people only buying a single card for their camera. And a lot of people didn't have a personal computer back them, so showing pictures was all done through the back LCD. And if you ran out of storage, you had to delete some pictures...

The boxy pictures could be the local equivalent of tapping things with fake nails and whispering 'Mercedes', which is also something I fail to understand :)

Maybe. Maybe not. Though I'm trully glad those people now can afford to buy such a tech beast nowadays wherever they are allocated.

    fake nails and whispering 'Mercedes'
    same kind of cultural values.

And with a video-first feature set.

How numerous is that "we"? Why Canon should follow Sony? IS the issue only in the EVF bump?
  7. Small, full frame, RF mount camera along the lines of the Sony A7 C series. I would like a Canon RF compatible second body that is lighter and smaller than my R5. I would buy one of these as soon as it was announced.
  8. Personally, I would love an original EOS-M styled RF body. So ‘we’ is at least 3 people :)
OK. Is it for some video needs? I hardly imagine non-EVF camera usage scenarios for myself.
However, Canon wasn't noticed as attentively listening to its customers company.

I don't think so. I think it's the video-first feature set in combination with no EVF. The Nikon Z30 is like that too.

Not for for video needs, I still use my original M and M6II and like the space saving of not having an EVF. For most of the family pictures with the R8 I don’t use the EVF either.
When I used the M50, the EVF drove me nuts, it distorted like crazy and gave me a headache. I strongly suspect that model only has an EVF to make it look more ‘professional’, it’s certainly not there to be used.

The majority of people isn’t going to use large and heavy lenses on such a camera, so the stability argument goes out the window as well. So I’ll take a smaller, cheaper camera over one with an atrocious token EVF.

FWIW, the R8 EVF is a joy to use.
