French publication phototrend.fr had a nice discussion about the state of Canon with Claire-Anne Devillard , the marketing director for Canon France during the recent Salon de la Photo 2024 show in Paris. France.

We’ll break down some of the highlights from the interview, but as always. the interview is quite positive, but also has some interesting moments.

Obviousy, the Canon EOS R5 Mark II and EOS R1 are the stars of the Canon lineup for the moment, and while the EOS R5 Mark II has had some issues early in it’s life, it looks like the EOS R1 has been extensively tested and hopefully doesn’t suffer the same fate once it begins shipping next month (or maybe a little bit later).

The camera has already been extensively tested during the major sporting events of the summer: Olympic and Paralympic Games, Euro football, Formula 1 Grand Prix… We have been able to see in the media around the world what this camera can produce. For us, it was an extraordinary showcase.

Is the EOS R1 simply an EOS R3 Mark II as the narrative was shortly after the official announcement of the camera? I know it’s not, as I have used the camera for more than shooting in an enviroment set up by Canon for the press. Still, those sorts of things will always be said after the king of the ILC world releases a new camera that doesn’t match whatever the “required” pixel count du jour is.

It’s not an EOS R3 Mark II

Clearly, it is the market figures that will re-establish the truth, and which are the most important for us. And for the moment, the observation is positive.

What are the best selling Canon products in France? Well it shouldn’t surprise anyone but it’s the APS-C equipped EOS R50. While we here at Canon Rumors are quite critical of the APS-C line from an ethusiast point of view. We here don’t really represent the majority of actual consumers. Canon appears to know what they’re doing.

I do love the EOS R50, and I use it as a terrific webcam as well as a lightweight video solution on a small gimbal. The kids also use it to get their creative juices flowing. I’m not quite comforable with them using the EOS R3 quite yet.

Regarding Camera Sales

.. The EOS R50 is the best-selling camera on the market from January to August 2024.

… The EOS R5 Mark II arrived at the end of August and is number 1 in sales at the end of August (in value)

… Overall, over the last 12 months, the market has been generally stable: +3% in volume and -1% in value.

What about lenses? It seems Canon’s strategy to get consumers to purchase native RF lenses is working in France. While the ethusiast world screams “Third-Party”! The buying public doesn’t seem to mind.

Yes, Canon did open things up on the APS-C side of things for SIGMA and Tamron, but the higher margin FF lenses remain closed to third parties and that will likely continue for the foreseeable future.

The EOS R system launched in 2018, and 6 years later Canon has already launched 42 RF mount lenses. That is a pretty incredible number when you think about the big picture with launching a new camera system.

Regarding RF Lens Sales

We are clearly leaders in this market, since we have a 29.4% market share from January to August 2024, double the number 2.

Canon also continues to sell DSLR cameras, though that market has obviously shrunk. There is such an amazing lineup of EF mount lenses, a lot of people simply see no reason to switch their entire system. According to Canon France, they sold 30,000 DSLRs in 2023, that is still a significant number. Mirrorless cameras? Well they sold about 100,000 units.

Keep in mind all of the numbers and statistics above pertain to Canon France, other countries may have different numbers in regards to marketshare claims and whatnot.

  1. I shoot both Canon and Nikon. I realize that the only 3rd party and non-mirrorless lenses I shoot are lightly used adapted DSLR lenses like the Sigma 40mm f/1.4 and EF 24-70L f/2.8 . The OEM RF and Z lenses are of such high quality that 3rd party lenses offer little allure for this enthusiast. However, if my budget was more limited, or there was a niche lens--like the Tamron 35-150mm--that fit my shooting style, I would be less content.
  2. Some individuals, as well. Not sure the media is entirely to blame for that.

    True, true.

What dlsr models were still in the lineup in 2023? Wasn’t it only the 1dxiii and 5Div?

It may be market dependant. France has the 2000D, 250D, 4000D, 850D, 90D, 5D Mark IV, 6D Mark II, EOS-1D X for sale.

Then, India for example is still selling the 200D, 90D, 5D Mark IV, 3000D and 1500D.

Sometimes I think we wear these in here, so we can focus exclusively on high-end camera gear.

Meanwhile, the average unit price of DSLRs shipped from Japan this year is $320...so that tells you what type of DSLRs most people are actually buying. The average unit price of MILCs is $820, which also tells you that most people are buying APS-C models not the FF cameras we seem to care far more about in here.

You probably don't need more evidence that this forum is not representative of typical camera buyers, but there you go...

Adding to this, one agency probably buys more R1s and high end RF telephoto lenses than all of this forum’s users combined. We are a microcosm. A vocal and demanding one, but certainly not one that Canon Marketing and R&D likely listen too. If they did, I would have my 10-24mm F2.8 UWA, 14mm F1.8 with perfect corners and 200-600 mm F4 with built in 1.4x adapter that weights less than the 100-500mm!
  5. My friend wanted a small camera that she could get into photography with and would be a step up from her iPhone. So we got her the R50 and I set it up for her. And I came away very impressed (at the time, I was an R5 and RP owner). It is well-designed for the smartphone user and has a number of smartphone-like features like the filters such as the skin-smoothing filter. In fact, it has a few features that even my R5, RP, and R5ii don\'t have. Luckily she didn\'t really want it for video as the iPhone is more spontaneous for social media.

    Your ridicule is overstated.
Canon Japan's official site shows 1DXiii/5Div and Kiss X90 (I missed the latter).

I'm not suggesting that there isn't old stock in a reseller's warehouse but 32k seems a lot.

Yes, it looks to be market dependent. Canon Australia lists 8 but only 6 with pricing. 4 are APS-C.
Strange that India is not selling the 1DXiii.
