    The next Canon EOS R5 Mark II firmware update coming this month

    We’re told that the next Canon EOS R5 Mark II firmware update will come with new features along with the usual bug fixes. The new firmware is already in testing with various pros and will add new video and photography features updates. We don’t have the release notes to know exactly what’s coming at this time.

    Canon is reportedly hoping to have the new firmware released before the end of October.

    There is always a possibility for a 1.0.2 type release before the feature release firmware to address any critical bugs that may still be present or that may be found in the mean time.

    We hope to hear more in the nearterm as to what we expect in new features for the EOS R5 Mark II. The only thing that Canon has mentioned is the ability to shoot 23.98/24p video with older LP-E6NH batteries. We can’t confirm that this will be part of the October firmware update.

    3. It’s comforting to hear that Canon is rumoured to add features after launch! I’d love to see oversampled 4k60, as well as start/end setting for focus stacking.
      I wonder if the pixel shift uprez ulra-pixel feature from the original R5 is coming back?
    4. I've have R5m2 for about a week and so far I have missed the customizable button command for toggling pre-capture on/off. Menu command is just too slow in fast situations. Another issue is the implementation of the customizable button command for switching between two frame rate capture settings. This is implemented so that you have to keep pressing button down to stay in the mode configured for the button while I think a toggle would have worked much better.

      Both of these options are needed to quickly reduce the number of images captured when 30fps capture is not required.

      I hope Canon makes it more appealing to use: faster capture, better error rejection, better-than-jpeg output and ideally 16 separate RAWs that DPP4 can process with better retouching options.

      8K oversampled 4K60p is still advertised as an R5 Mark II feature on the official Canon Europe website.

      They must’ve cut this feature in the last minute. Maybe executives wanted to artificially limit the R5 Mark II to protect the R5C and leave it as an exclusive feature for their R5C or R5C Mark II.

      Kinda disappointing tbh… I hope 8K oversampled 4K60p will be added with a firmware update. The R5 Mark II should be better than the R5C in every way which it isn’t until 8K oversampled 4K60p is added!

      My feeling is that a number of features were cut from the initial firmware because they were too buggy. Since no one has leaked internal Canon correspondence on that, we'll never know the real reason :)

      I'd be a lot happier if I could get the hot shoe adapter so I could use my new camera in the studio! Come on Canon!
    10. Hopefully improvements in AF tracking and less sensor noise, my two biggest issues with the camera. But I\'m not holding my breath. Maybe in the R5M3 in another 4 years.

      You don’t need the adapter for ‘old’ flashes and triggers to work, you only need it if you want to keep the weather sealing on the 600EX series intact.
    12. I’m still getting very wonky exposure metering. It’s all over the place on this camera. It will read 2/3-stop over so I’ll lower exposure by 2/3 and then it will say 1/3 under or 2/3 under and never actually say it’s exposed properly on the back of the camera. Very odd behavior.

      The pre-capture toggle button is on the top of my list right now. I end not using it often because of that. There are some situations for which it is really useful, but most of the time I don't really want it. So the trade-off is not using, and missing some moments, always on and having it on and ending up with a ton of unwanted images or (what I have been doing) switching back and forth through the menu. The switching back and forth takes too much time and I end up missing shots, which defeats the purpose of a pre-capture feature.

      My solution is to use back button focussing and not have the shutter button for focussing. Half pressing the button actuates exposure and pre-capture and full pressing the ES. Quickly pressing the shutter doesn't initiate pre-focus, or perhaps just one or two frames.

      Maybe we have misunderstood each other. I prefocus with one of the back buttons, and press the shutter either immediately fully for just a a couple of shots longer for a burst, or half press and use precapture until ready for full pressing.

      Yes, I was just mentioning that I use the pre-focus on the shutter button in my normal operation and have other buttons already assigned to AF functions. I like your solution as it gives something close to what I want. It would require me finding another button for the whole area focus (so I can pre-focus on it, whithout initiating pre-capture) and then use the shutter button in the manner you describe. It would take some getting use to the new layout as well. Perhaps revamping the entire setup to take advantage of that approach. Need to think about it and perhaps experiment.

      But, in the mean time, I keep hoping for a FW update where I can assign the toggle to a button to more easily solve my problem :)

      I use two buttons for BBF, the * button exactly as you do, but the AF-on for what you use the shutter for, eyeAF with full screen tracking. I use the M-fn for toggling around the C1, C2, C3 and Fv, which is sufficient for me but others do a lot more customization and need more buttons.
